Royal Wedding Gala Gowns:Stephanie of Luxembourg

Five years ago this week, Hereditary Grand Duke Guillaume of Luxembourg married Countess Stephanie de Lannoy in a wedding (or two) to remember. The last heir of his generation to say 'I do' did it not once, but twice, as he and his bride exchanged vows in a civil ceremony on October 19th and then again in a religious service on October 20th. In between that they held a gala dinner to celebrate their nuptials with royal guests from across Europe filling the Ducal Palace in Luxembourg on the night of the 19th for a glittering celebration. Which means that not only did royal bride, Stephanie, get two wedding dresses she also got a gala gown to go in her marriage wardrobe sandwich. As the happy couple celebrate their wood anniversary (yep, five years is really owning it with the gifts), let's get all sparkly and look back at a gala night to remember...

After a triumph of a cream Chanel earlier in the day, Stephanie got us all ready for the big frock the following day by choosing a gown by her wedding dress designer. The bride was to wear Elie Saab for her religious marriage and she chose him to make her gala look as well.

The dress, in gun metal grey, is a fabulous mix of regal and romance. Stephanie showed she was more than ready for her royal close up by picking a gown with all the interest in the neckline - most of the photos of it were taken as she sat down for dinner so the top had to be the star of the show. The pretty lace dress gives way to a sheer, ruched panel at the neck while there's also a pretty dipped, draped back to keep the interest going.

This is pretty much pure fairytale princess stuff, with a fitted waist giving way to a gently flared skirt that skims into a mini train (it's a royal wedding, no one is getting away with cocktail here). The colour is strong enough to stand out against the opulence of the Ducal Palace where the gala dinner was given while soft enough to be bridal. There's plenty of glitter on the intricate lace overlay. Oh, and Stephanie added one of her new family's diamond tiaras to the look just to make sure the sparkle quota was filled.

This was a stand out look for Stephanie and helped complete one of the most memorable royal bridal ensembles of the 21st century. Between the subtle charm of her Chanel at the civil wedding and the full on fabulousness of her Elie Saab dress for the religious marriage, this chic gala gown adds just the right note of glamour to produce a trio that any royal bride would be happy to wear. Five years on, Stephanie of Luxembourg's regal wedding wardrobe still stands the test of time.

Royal Wedding Outfits: Stephanie of Luxembourg

What's better than a royal wedding dress? Why, two royal wedding dresses of course. While more than one recent royal bride has gone through both a religious and civil ceremony to marry, not all of them get to do the double dress whammy. But Stephanie de Lannoy wasn't going to say 'I do' in just one frock. The future Grand Duchess of Luxembourg gave us two regal wedding looks for her two ceremonies five years ago this week. On the anniversary of her civil marriage to Hereditary Grand Duke Guillaume of Luxembourg, here's a look back at what Stephanie wore to say 'I do' first time round.

The civil marriage of Stephanie Marie Claudine Christine de Lannoy and Guillaume Jean Joseph Marie de Luxembourg took place at the Hotel de Ville in Luxembourg City on October 19th 2012. The then mayor of Luxembourg, Xavier Bettel, was in charge of proceedings - he, of course, is now the country's Prime Minister.

The royal wedding of Stephanie and Guillaume was a huge affair and attracted a lot of global coverage, not least because the groom was the last heir to the throne of his generation to get married. But while the guest list for the religious marriage on October 20th included royalty from just about every corner of Europe and beyond, the civil wedding was for family only and rather low key. Apart from the huge crowds, endless flags and mammoth walkabout that came with it.

For this first foray into the royal wedding spotlight, Stephanie chose a Chanel suit in dark cream with some rather slinky silver highlights. It is pure Chanel from its tweed texture to skirt and jacket shaping and it's really rather elegant.

But as this is a wedding, and a royal one at that, there had to be a bit of bling. We all know that Luxembourg's royals can outglitter the best and rest of them without even blinking and Belgian born Stephanie showed she was more than with her husband's family on that, adding a silver bag and shoes  (Chanel, natch, as you can see from the soles) to her first wedding outfit and all without looking like a Christmas tree. They, in turn, welcomed her into the sparkly fold by all choosing outfits in muted metallic shades - yep, even Grand Duchess Maria Teresa kept it low key in burnished gold for her first born's big day. Elegance everywhere.

It all works rather well together and while all brides are beautiful, Stephanie really did shimmer and shine on the first of her big days. The girl's a trooper, too. You can see her main wedding dress here tomorrow but before then pop back for a reminder of the rather lovely gala gown she wore on the night of October 19th for the glittering dinner sandwiched between her two weddings. Anyone who can entertain royalty just after one marriage and just before another is a duchess on a grand scale. Oh, and she rewore the Chanel at the end of wedding two for a fireworks performance. Stephanie of Luxembourg had being a royal bride down to a tee.

All change for this royal trio?

They've been a trusty trio for several years now but one image from the latest appearance of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry perhaps highlights how things will change...and how soon. For on their visit to celebrate the Coach Core programme on October 18th, this royal three found themselves with a spare seat right next to a certain handsome prince. Harry seemed to be warming the chair for another member of this new generation of royals. Is this the last time we see the trio before three become four?

Founded by The Royal Foundation in 2012, Coach Core is an apprenticeship scheme which trains 16-24 year olds to be sports coaches and mentors in their communities. 98% of graduates on the scheme will go into full-time employment or education and continue to engage in community sport. Five years on, there are now 10 areas across the country to take part in Coach Core. The newest locations in Middlesbrough, Bristol and Devon were announced today. Prince Harry made a speech at the graduation saying, 'Coach Core currently operates in 7 cities across the country. But such is the demand for these highly skilled coaches that I am delighted to announce that The Royal Foundation will be expanding our investment in the programme. Today we are launching three new Coach Core programmes in: Middlesbrough, Devon, and Bristol.' 📷PA

William, Kate and Harry visited the London Stadium to mark the graduation of 150 new members of the Coach Core scheme. The initiative was set up by the trio's Royal Foundation five years ago and it helps young people aged between 16 and 24 to become sports coaches. To mark its birthday, as well as celebrate the achievements of those who were graduating, the royals spent time chatting to those involved in the scheme as well as those supporting it.

It's the second time we've seen this royal trio in less than 48 hours, after their engagement at Paddington Station where they were visiting children going through difficult times and being treated to a day to remember. But while plenty of attention has been focused on the baby bump of a certain duchess (who was back in blue after a pinch of pink earlier in the week), it was Prince Harry who was really getting people talking this time round.

Not only did the prince deliver the keynote speech in which he told those involved in the programme how proud he, his brother and sister in law were of them and talked about the power of sport, he also got to announce the expansion of the Coach Core programme - another sign of the huge success his royal initiatives enjoy.

But it was the sight of a spare seat next to Harry at one point in the engagement that really seemed to highlight why all eyes were on him. There is something about Harry right now that more than underlines the fact we're heading for a royal wedding. The prince seems happier and more confident in himself than we've ever seen him and having introduced girlfriend, Meghan Markle, to the informal royal engagement with several appearances together at the Invictus Games, it now feels more than inevitable that sooner, rather than later, we will see the two together as a royal couple in the making.

The royal trio of William, Kate and Harry have been a fixture for six years now but the times are a changing. With an added member, this group has more power to achieve their ambitions and more opportunity to expand the appeal of the Royal Family to a new generation. There is something about this engagement that says it might well be the end of one era and the dawn of a new world, to the power of four.

Kate's date for 2018

So just about everyone had it right. Kensington Palace caused absolutely no surprises today by confirming that baby Cambridge number 3 is due in April 2018. After the announcement that Kate and William are expecting another child was made at the start of September, all predictions pointed to an April due date. Now it's been well and truly inked in the royal diary.

The announcement was short, sweet and social media based. A tweet in the afternoon gave lots of royal watchers an epic amount of satisfaction as they could award themselves a pat on the back for having read this royal pregnancy to perfection. Given that Kate's previous two sets of great expectations had seen her cancel engagements due to Hyperemesis Gravidarum around 5 or 6 weeks into her pregnancies, it was always odds on that the same had happened this time round and the new fifth in line to the throne was destined to be an April baby. Tweet sent, sums confirmed. The wise will already have reserved their spot at the Lindo Wing.

It wasn't the only news from KP today - steady, there's no engagement ring to be seen here and besides dad, Charles, will probably get to do that tweet from the Clarence House account. No, it was confirmed that the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will be heading to Norway and Sweden for an official visit in the early part of 2018. That means January or February although neither the royals in London or those in Oslo, who also confirmed the visit, were more forthcoming on actual dates.

Which means we'll just have to content ourselves with knowing what the future holds in a rather vague way as we head towards what will be an epic year for the House of Windsor. William gets to go to Finland by himself at the end of November but after that, expect the royal rollercoaster to really gather pace. We've got royal reunions, an engagement that is all but done and dusted and now a spring day at St. Mary's as baby number three joins the Cambridge clan. Kate's dates for 2018 are looking great.

The Dancing Duchess

What's a duchess to do when a prince tells a life size bear to dance with her? Kate surprised everyone with an appearance at a charity event today and got a bit of a surprise herself when brother in law, Harry, suggested Paddington give her a twirl. Here's what happened to the dancing duchess.

Embed from Getty Images

Kate wasn't expected at the event at Paddington Station which was celebrating children going through hard times. Over 100 youngsters had been chosen by the royal charities forum involving William, Kate and Harry to enjoy a special day out on board a steam train. But as the special guests got ready to depart, they found themselves with a right royal send off.

The Duchess of Cambridge has only been seen once in public since the beginning of September when she confirmed she is expecting her third baby in the spring of 2018. Kate has been suffering from Hyperemsis Gravidarum, an extreme form of morning sickness, but Kensington Palace says she is now starting to feel better and her surprise appearance seemed to confirm that.

She joined the Duke of Cambridge and Prince Harry at Paddington to see off the train as the children began a day of adventures. And that's where the adventures began for Kate. Paddington Bear tried to get Prince Harry to dance with him but the fifth in line to the throne was having none of it performing his own version of a gentleman's excuse me and passing the bear dancing duties to his sister in law.

Maybe it's being stuck indoors for the past five weeks. but Kate positively sprang into action, all but jiving along with the music and showing off a few deft moves of her own. The trio also had a chance to hop on board the train to chat to some of those lined up for a day of special treats.

After going baby blue on us last week, Kate went for palest pink this time round. But with most estimates putting this duchess at just short of twelve weeks pregnant. the chances of knowing the gender of this latest royal baby right now are slim. Instead, we got a smiling appearance from a Kate apparently on the mend with plenty to put a spring in her step. No wonder this duchess was dancing.

A king in waiting turns 12

The future king of Denmark is 12 today. Prince Christian, born October 15th 2005, might be celebrating behind closed palace doors but like all monarchs in waiting. there is a birthday appearance. The boy who will be king in a generation of girls born to be queen has marked the occasion with a new official photo.

The image was taken on board the royal yacht, Dannebrog, by Christian's mum, Crown Princess Mary. It's likely mama got busy for the birthday during the family's impromptu tour of Denmark during the summer. In August, Mary and Crown Prince Frederik took their four children on a visit to some of the top tourist spots in the country as the Danish Royal Family tried to put a bad few months behind it. Now, with the dust settling on what proved to be a sad summer for them all with the confirmation that Prince Henrik has dementia, the image that remains of that time is of a future king.

Christian Valdemar Henri John, Prince of Denmark and Count of Monpezat, was born on October 15th 2005 in Copenhagen. the first child of Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary. He now has three siblings, ten year old Isabella and six year old twins, Vincent and Josephine. He lives with his family in the Danish capital where he attends school. As his teenage years approach, Christian will no doubt find more royal responsibilities creeping into his life. Judging by the photo mum took, this future king will be facing them with confidence.

State Visit Style: Queen Maxima in Portugal

Well, thanks for that. Queen Maxima has got the autumn State Visit season off to a flying start with a wardrobe that can only be described as eclectic. After luring us into a false state of security with a very Maxima outfit to start off with things went from feathers to flowers as the Queen of the Netherlands tried out all kinds of different looks on her three day visits. You'll love some, you'll be less certain about others but because it's Friday and because we've not been able to do this for months. here's the return of State Visit style as Queen Maxima wows Portugal.

The Dutch king and queen arrived in Lisbon on the evening of October 9th 2017 ahead of the official welcome the following day. There was no missing Maxima at the airport as she gave us purple trousers, purple top and bright pink scarf all in one go. That's the way to make a first impression.

Things were much more muted for the first full official day of the State Visit. We've seen Maxima in this overall look many times before. For a day which included an official welcome (complete with national anthems and inspection of the guard), a ride on a tram and a visit to the tomb of poet Luiz Vaz de Camoes, Maxima kept things calm in a beige dress with large brimmed straw hat and toning accessories. The hat is so familiar it's almost uniform for the Queen of the Netherlands while the dress is pretty usual too. Don't worry, things are about to get a lot busier.

The State Banquet involved an all time Maxima classic. The Dutch queen chose an off the shoulder green dress with fabulous frills and spills at the edge of the skirt. The feather effect embellishments on top of lace might be too much for most people to pull off. Not Maxima. She added that cracker of an emerald tiara belonging to her royal house along with some of its most stunning green stones and wowed all round. The queen of green in Portugal.

Day two involved about as packed an agenda as you'll find in a royal diary this week. The King and Queen of the Netherlands visited a cancer treatment centre, met students at the University of Lisbon, held a trade lunch, opened an art exhibition and posed for photos by the Tagus River. It was sunny, there were blue skies, it was almost like summer which may be why Maxima stuck the world's biggest fabric flower to the side of her head. The dress is a familar royal sight - Crown Princess Victoria has the same frock and debuted it at the christening of Prince Alexander last year. However, Maxima tried to mix it up and make it her own by adding a range of accessories in a variety of colours, none of which seemed to go with the dress itself. When even Maxi can't make a look work, it really is beyond royal hope.

Embed from Getty Images

There was no retiring quietly despite the mismatch. On the evening of day two, Queen Maxima and King Willem-Alexander welcomed their hosts to a concert given as a thank you from them for the visit. Can you spot the Dutch queen? Yep, why wear one trend when you can pack several into an outfit that will linger long in the memory? We've got this season's hottest colour, red. We've got the vogue for stripes and blocks. We've got this summer's cape sleeves. We've got it all in one dress. Maxima is in a league of her own and then some.

Embed from Getty Images

It's not how you start, it's how you finish as they say and for her last hurrah in Portugal, Maxima tried a mix of all the fabulous fancy bits she'd shown us already on this three day visit. The last part of the trip saw the royal couple head out of Lisbon for a day involving time at the gorgeous palace of Sintra and a visit to an aeronautical factory. What better outfit to pick for this than a one sleeved top with tassle effect skirt and a large floral headpiece? We can only be glad that she went for palest peach and nothing bolder because this is such a statement it defies description. But it sums up the State Visit style of this trip perfectly. It's bold, it's got its own sense of style and no one will ever forget it. Rather like the queen wearing it. Well played, Maxima.
