Royal Outfit of the Day: November 17

I basically never get this dressed up for anything. So the fact that Máxima gets this dressed up to, uh, cut some cheese is delightful from the start.
Last week, Queen Máxima had a day of engagements including opening a new building for a cheese company.
This is half of an outfit we've seen on her before, last time pairing the gold top with trousers as per the Natan model (left, below) and this time pairing it with a burgundy pencil skirt and burgundy and gold accessories, including brooches by an Argentine designer. And while it does still have the air of the Mad Men maternity department (maybe she was just planning on sampling as much as possible at the cheese place - can't blame her for that), I do find the skirt to be an improvement.
The hat, were it an actual pillbox, would have also constituted an improvement. Alas...
It's more of a life preserver than a donut this time, wouldn't you say? It's a safety measure, guys, jeez.

Royal Trip of the Day: November 7

What has Crown Princess Mary been up to lately? Emptying her closet of all available printed items, it seems.
Dolce & Gabbana skirt, Etro coat
All these prints went on a trip with her to South Africa this week, a visit which focused on things like sexual and reproductive health and rights, which Mary is a big advocate for, as well as commercial cooperation between Denmark and South Africa cooperation and the like.
Heartmade dress, Massimo Dutti dress
And this is a great example of a wardrobe hitting just the right note - it's fun to put it all together, but it's not the centerpiece of the trip. Billed-Bladet's YouTube channel has plenty of videos to give you a feel for the visit, such as this one in which Mary makes a new friend:

Blouse from Hugo Boss

This is not a comprehensive round up, but I will include one of my favorite looks, from an evening reception:
I do love a maxi skirt and a big earring. It's just the right mix of formal and informal, no?
Giambattista Valli skirt and gold plated sterling silver earrings from Jewlscph

Mary's world travels didn't stop in South Africa this week. On the way home, she stopped in Geneva at the United Nations.
A conservative we're-doing-business suit is precisely what such a day entails, but I (and Queen Elizabeth II) approve of her choice to liven things up with a little brooch action.
A classy finish to a working week, all in all.

Royal Garden Party of the Day: June 11

Royal Garden Party of the Day: June 11

At Buckingham Palace yesterday, the Queen hosted a garden party with several members of the royal family in attendance.
And who was the best dressed royal at the garden party, you ask?
The birthday boy, of course! The Duke of Edinburgh turned 93 yesterday, and he's still one of the most debonair royals around. Look at this coordinating tie/boutonnière/top hat game! And on a gray morning suit no less, a very sophisticated color palette. Yes, he takes the bite-sized garden party-appropriate cake here.

The Queen was my second best dressed pick, but that's what my other blog is for, so click here.

And after those two kids comes, well, everybody else. Line up, ladies!
Thank you, very helpful, let's work from left to right: We've got the Duchess of Gloucester, very understated but elegant by default. The Princess Royal seems to be wearing a hat purchased in the last decade for a change, always a delightful surprise, and she's got lovely aquamarine accessories (including a brooch that used to be the central part of her Aquamarine Pineflower Tiara). The Duchess of Cambridge is repeating an outfit I loved the first time around, but she removed the ribbon belt and changed up the hat and accessories. As much as I appreciate trying to shake it up for a repeat...I, uh, really miss the original belt and hat. Oh well. On the bright side, Princess Eugenie's got some shoe interest happening, and that will always cheer me up right quick. Well done.

Royal Outfit of the Day: May 12

Queen Margrethe attended the wedding of Crown Prince Frederik and Mary Donaldson, May 14, 2004.
I'm sure there are all sorts of "rules" you can come up with for how the mother of the groom is supposed to dress for a wedding. And I'm guessing precious few of those so-called guidelines include bright pink and giant diamonds. But Margrethe happens to be both the mother of the groom and the reigning queen, and she does what she wants.

Video, above: The gown underneath in action, entering the banquet
After helping Mary select a series of pinks for her bridesmaids, she went along with the group in a pink coat with voluminous sleeves and leaves scattered over the bottom of the sleeves and coat. The silk coat covered a silk faille floral gown with three-quarter sleeves with bows, and a train. Her handbag and her shoes were made from the same floral fabric, and the outfit was made by Mogens Eriksen. When it comes to Margrethe ensembles, this is one of my favorites: the coat is a unique way to cover up for the church, and the dress underneath was tremendously flattering. The whole thing is just so Margrethe. It would look ridiculous on just about anyone else, but it's perfect for Daisy.
Diamonds worn by Margrethe to the wedding: the Crown brilliant set (center) and the Floral Aigrette Tiara (right)
Her choice of accessories - GIANT DIAMONDS - absolutely can't be beat. She selected a brilliant-cut set of diamonds from the Danish crown jewels, which belong to the state and can be viewed at Rosenborg Castle when not in use. It has been said to be the most valuable set at the Queen's disposal, with diamonds that are both large and historically significant (the setting was created by C.M. Weisshaupt in 1840, with stones that had been the family prior to that, used in other pieces of jewelry since the 1700s). The brilliant set consists of an enormous floral brooch set en tremblant with earrings and a necklace containing floral elements; the earrings include pear-drop diamond pendants and the necklace has seven similar pendants. She also wore the Floral Aigrette Tiara, which is a part of her personal collection but coordinates perfectly with the crown brilliants. The Floral Aigrette was bought for Margrethe's mother, Queen Ingrid, and Ingrid first wore it at Margrethe's own wedding. The brilliant set was also worn by Ingrid at Margrethe and Henrik's 1967 wedding, so the selections here have significance beyond wearing important things for an important event.
The coat in its current dress form
Queen Margrethe did repeat this outfit as it was worn in 2004 after the wedding, but eventually she changed it up. Never one to let a good outfit go to waste, she had the pink coat re-engineered into a dress of its own, and she's worn it many times since (including for the official portrait seen above). I'm not so sure that was a successful change, since the volume on the sleeves in their new shorter length is a bit much, but then I probably just miss the glory of the original ensemble. Ah, well. It was perfect while it lasted.

Psst: It's a two post day! Keep scrolling.

Royal Outfit(s) of the Day: April 25

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge finished up their tour of Australia and New Zealand with engagements in Canberra. Video, above, at the National Arboretum.
Picking up where we left off! Designer: Catherine Walker. Color: CAPS LOCK GREEN. Verdict: There's no losing this one in a crowd. (Click here for more.)

Next up: Reception! Click the link in the tweet for more.
Teams I am on: Team Updo. Teams I am not on: Team Bubble Wrap Lace. Sorry, Lela Rose, I'm usually a big fan.

And finally: Anzac Day, a day of remembrance. Starting off with dawn service and then heading on to the National War Memorial...
Coat: Nicely swingy. Hat: ....present. Brooch: Best bit. Maybe not the brooch some of you were hoping for, but one that has a good deal more meaning for this particular occasion. It was given to her the previous night by Emma, wife of Corporal Benjamin Roberts-Smith, one of the holders of the Victoria Cross for Australia. A lovely gesture to wear it, and I hope we see it at future remembrance events.

And then they went home, and then this part of the world went to bed.

This is our final post of the trip - you're probably either suffering from Wills n' Kate fatigue or, on the other side of the coin, are about to go into withdrawal as the Cambridges return to a normal schedule. Either way, it's time for your final assessment: What was your favorite tour outfit? For me, I'm sticking to the poppies.

Royal Outfit of the Day: April 14

Video: The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge attended church in Dunedin during their New Zealand tour.
Behold, the most New Zealand outfit yet: dress by Emilia Wickstead, who is based in London but was born in New Zealand, plus the Queen's New Zealand Fern Brooch again. Even the Jane Taylor hat looks a little fern-ish. Click here for more pictures.
This dress gives me a bit of déjà vu, and for good reason - we've seen it in pink in the past. My favorite Emilia Wickstead? Nah. But I am in love with this color, and would take it any day over the pink.
What say you: teal version, or pink?

Bonus Royal Outfit of the Day: April 7

The Cambridge family tour of New Zealand and Australia has commenced.
More like "Prince George and his entourage arrive in Wellington", amirite? Little scene stealer covered up my favorite part of any outfit - the diamonds - and I can't even be mad about it.
Yes, in addition to the red Catherine Walker coat and oh-so-Jackie-O matching Gina Foster pillbox hat, the Duchess borrowed a very appropriate bit of bling from the Queen's vault: the New Zealand Fern Brooch, which you can read more about at the Jewel Vault. Unlike, say, the Maple Leaf Brooch, this one doesn't have a history of loans, so this is a bit special. The tour doesn't have a lot of opportunities for formal jewelry built in, but it will be nice to see if she brings out any other surprises.

P.S. This is a double post day, keep scrolling!
P.P.S.: This blog is taking a couple days off and returning on Thursday, but the Jewel Vault will still be updated in the meantime.

Royal Outfit of the Day: March 24

The Dutch royal family hosted a state visit from China. Queen Máxima wore a repeated pink Valentino gown (a previous appearance, far right) which has been altered to add lace to the bottom tiers. She paired it with pearl and diamond jewelry, including the Antique Pearl Tiara.
Her outfit for the welcoming ceremony was unfortunate (who am I kidding, it's a new topper for my list of contenders for 2014's Worst Royal Outfit), but never mind, because TIARA! And this is a good one too, particularly delicious on Máx and so well emphasized by the extra pearl jewels and the soft pink color. The added lace takes the gown from something standard to something special, but for every gain there's a loss - now the sash has more to compete with, and it looks extra awkward. Fingers crossed she finds an occasion with tiara but without orders for the next time around. (For a second gallery from the visit, click here.)

Royal Outfit of the Day: March 18

Video: The Duchess of Cambridge, along with the Duke of Cambridge, presented shamrocks to the Irish Guards on St. Patrick's Day. She wore a green coat from Hobbs with a Gina Foster hat and green shoes.
There's an ever-so-slight difference in greens here, notably between the hat and the coat - not different enough to be intentional, not quite alike enough to pass the daytime lighting test - and it makes me twitchy. It's an annoying nitpick, I know, and it's not even evident in different light, but this is one of the reasons why I'm not a fan of super matchy accessories. (Not as evident in the video, thank heavens, but click here for picture overload from the Daily Mail.)
Behind her shamrock is the Cartier shamrock brooch dating back to Queen Alexandra in 1901 that has been worn since by royal ladies for Irish Guards engagements.
However! This coat length looks even better on Kate than it does on the model, so kudos.

Royal Outfit of the Day: February 4

The Dutch royal family attended a 'farewell party' for Princess Beatrix, a performance to celebrate her reign, on Saturday. Princess Beatrix wore purple with diamond accessories and a gray wrap on arrival; Queen Máxima wore a new blue Natan gown (runway, far right) and sapphire and diamond accessories.
Sure, Máxima gave us something to talk about (that sapphire brooch at her waist? Hasn't been seen in decades, a wee treat for those of us that pay attention to such things), but Beatrix is the real star of this show, and our real outfit of the day. Purple gown (love), megawatts of diamond shine (all things combined - the size of diamonds in that necklace! the size of that brooch! - she totally out-blinged Máxima), and a huge, huge smile to top it off.

Case in point, the above video. Watch from 3:25 at least. Sparkly and giggly, that's how I like my Beatrix!
