Royal Color Scheme of the Day: April 22

The King and Queen of the Belgians visited Strasbourg, France yesterday, and Mathilde wore something a little bit familiar...
...but not really, because it's new. Apparently the pleated red dress, jacket, and hat worn when the couple made their introductory visit to Germany in 2014 weren't enough to fill the "folded effects/red division" portion of the royal wardrobe, because now we have a slightly darker and slightly simpler red dress with similar details hat. The dress detailing is confined to just one side of the skirrt, which is both an interesting detail and possibly not an interesting enough detail for a fairly basic outfit.
Dior shoes (worn by Mathilde in a different color)
The primary point of interest can't be seen on the above photo, I'm afraid (click here for a gallery, though, or here for a video). Floral shoes! They are (per ModeKoninginMathilde) from Dior, but instead of the green version above, they are pink/red. And they are possibly the best pair of shoes Mathilde's ever worn. WANT. Oh, and P.S.: Look, Ma! Heels and no crutches! Queen Robocop has left the building.

Since we're on Red Queens from Benelux Countries - Mathilde has her specific wardrobe sections, we have our specific coverage sections - Queen Máxima headed from Denmark to Washington, D.C. last week as part of her work in financial inclusion. She repeated a red Natan frock that I thought was a hit originally, and I think is a hit on the second go too.
Who knew talking about finance was such a kick, huh?

British Royal Outfits of the Day: March 20 (Updated)

While I've been in a state visit coma, assorted Windsors have been doing their thing. Time to play catch up, y'all!
Will and Kate made their annual St. Patrick's Day visit to the Irish Guards, an event more about shamrocks and giant dogs and uniforms with frock coats than about other clothes.
But since "sartorial" is right in the name of the blog and all, I will duly report that Kate was in a repeated Lock & Co. hat and a new Catherine Walker coat. All brown, and while that is by its very nature not the most exciting of colors, this was quite elegant and she looked great.
The Duchess had another engagement this week too, for which she wore a new ASOS maternity dress and a repeated black coat with ruffle trim (by her mysterious "independent dressmaker," apparently).
And this was supremely cute. Polka dots are the best. I hope she went home and twirled, like this model's apparently about to do. Polka dots deserve a twirl.

Chaz and Cams embarked on their U.S. visit, which kicked off with a few meetings (oh hello there President Obama, Uncle Joe), a bit of sight seeing, and some general tourist schmoozing.
This geometric trim deal is a great outfit on the Duchess of Cornwall, no? It's from Bruce Oldfield. It didn't look quite so clean with her scarf and that fur-trimmed black hat she's been living in of late, so we don't have to look at those pics. Problem solved.
This evening reception dress is also Oldfield, but I'm mostly interested in the fact that she's rocking a cape and a selection from her magnificent collection of pearl chokers. (Those things would pull my attention in almost every situation, to be fair.)

And finally we have Prince Harry, who launched Walking With The Wounded's trek around Britain this week. Harry's got a lot going on now, what with leaving the army and all that, but I think we can all agree that the most important thing is that he continues to look really good in casual gear. #priorities

P.S.: Since we're catching up with the Windsors, let me tell you that it has been a jolly week at the Jewel Vault too. Highlights: William and QEII had a little Take Your Grandson to Work Day (for which she wore a Cambridge emerald brooch just to give those of us on the Brooch Identification Squad a chuckle), and Her Maj got a canine guard of honor, which is THE BEST.

Update: Here's Cams on the last day of the U.S. trip.
She made some new friends in Kentucky in an outfit from Dior (oh la la) and the newest addition to her pearl choker collection, one with an Art Deco sapphire clasp.
And here is an evening engagement during the trip that I missed (per the caption, it's the International Conservation Caucus Foundation Gala where Charles was presented with the ICCF Teddy Roosevelt Award for Exceptional Leadership in Conservation, March 19):
And how could I miss this one - that's my very favorite of Camilla's pearl chokers! Oh, that thing makes me happy every time I see it. So glad she brought that to the U.S. with her.

Year in Review: 2014's Honorable Mentions

We've reached the end of our year in review series! We've covered the events, the tiaras, and the best outfits from each of our most frequently featured royal women. But our regular players aren't the only ones churning out great appearances, of course, and so today belongs to the other outfits worn this year that you just can't forget. A few of my favorite 2014 things...

Charlotte Casiraghi
Charlotte Casiraghi's partnership with Gucci is paying off in the sartorial stakes. This Gucci dress was sleek in all the right ways, with just a hint of metallic to set things off.

I'm a sucker for a good windowpane print and this Dior hits the spot. Add in a full skirt, and I'm well and truly done for - yes, the couture queen (couture sheikha) struck again this year.

Princess Beatrice
This one has all my favorites: bringing another designer into the royal mix (Nicholas Oakwell), a little full skirt, white, and colorful accessories (purple shoes, hello!). A winner all around for Beatrice.

Princess Haya
Someone has to bring the Eliza Doolittle flavor to Ascot each year. I'm pretty sure it's written right in the rules. And Haya did so in major fashion this year, instantly winning a spot on my best of the year list.

Hey, I did warn you about my love affair with the color white. I could go on, but we'll cap it there and turn it over to you:

What other sartorial moments will you remember from 2014?

Well, this is an ethereal little gown, no?
The Prince and Princess of Monaco attended the Princess Grace Awards. Prince not shown. Use your imagination.
It's pretty much a maternity standard, but there are reasons why things are standards, and this really works for her. I mean, I have no idea if this twin pregnancy has been easy on Charlene or not, but at least as long as she's wearing a floaty gown like this, she looks like she's sailing through. It's couture from Dior, of course, because they sponsored the event.

For me, though, the real show was the earrings. THESE EARRINGS. Have a little sparkle to get your through your Friday:
WANT. Charlene's minimal look and lack of tiara love masks the fact that she's actually worn some pretty serious pieces over the years, many of them modern. If these are all ending up in her personal collection, consider me crazy jealous.

And by the way...in case you weren't buying the confirmations to Hello or Point de Vue, the palace this week issued an official announcement confirming that Albert and Charlene are indeed expecting twins.
A much bigger question mark comes from the Italian edition of Vanity Fair, which is reporting that Andrea Casiraghi and Tatiana Santo Domingo are expecting their second child. Princess Caroline's crew isn't big on official announcements, so we'll just have to wait and see if it turns out to be true.

Mini Dior Shopping Spree...

Here's a little post to show you how carried away I got at the Dior stand I found in Ireland. I bought a couple of items and would love to show them to you... HERE GOES!

Firstly, I picked up this gorgeous Dior Addict Lipgloss in the colour SEAFARER.

Dior Addict Gloss 642 Seafarer RRP £22

I have fallen in love with this bright coral coloured lip gloss, which has been perfect over the summer months. Seafarer accentuates your lips by creating a medium colour payoff - it is in the middle of sheer and opaque. I adore the glossy moisturizing feel this leaves on my lips too; I am very happy with this purchase.

Afterwards, I looked at the eye products. I spotted the eyeshadow palettes and may have fallen in love with this one called SUNDECK.

Dior 5 Couleurs Transat Edition 564 Sundeck RRP £41

To begin with, the packaging is incredible - a deep blue compact lined with silver. It even has a cute little pocket with the CD initials on! I love how luxurious this palette looks, inside and out. There are five powder eyeshadows, three shimmery and two matte. I love the one in the centre as it is engraved to look like rope; it is a gorgeous muted orange with golden flecks scattered all over. All of these are very everyday wearable, in my perspective (most probably because I always stick to neutral eyes). I cannot wait to try out all the colours!

Finally, I picked up a little summer nail polish duo in two amazing colours, a shimmering sea blue and stunning mint green. This is from the Summer Bird of Paradise Collection called SAMBA.

Dior Bird of Paradise Summer Nail Lacquer Duo 001 Samba RRP £22

I decided to pick up this duo because 1. I am completely obsessed with mint green and collect mint green nail polishes and 2. I have wanted Pacific from the Barry M Aquarium collection for ages now and this is an exact dupe. However, if you are on a tight budget, I would obviously recommend getting the Barry M one, as they are only £3.99. I cannot wait to see how these nail polishes apply.

I hope you enjoyed this mini haul. If you wish to see any of these reviewed in a future post then make sure to leave a comment! Don't hesitate to comment some constructive criticism; tell me what you like and dislike about my posts, give me suggestions to improve etc. I want to make y'all happy:-)

Prince Albert and Princess Charlene attended the annual Red Cross Ball in Monaco.
Welcome to the summer doldrums of royal watching, when any bit of sparkle - no matter how small - in anyone's hair is cause for celebration. And on that note: CHARLENE! A diamond bracelet, diamond earrings, and a petite diamond headband from Graff. Wee steps towards Tiaraville, we can only hope.
Her custom gown from Dior included a bit of a train but the navy and black color scheme kept it simple, all the better to show off those diamonds. Just plain pretty, I say.

Potential Royal Couture of the Day: July 11

The Fall 2014 Couture shows happened this week in Paris. Let's do what we do and gaze at some prettiness while making our wish lists for what we hope to see on our favorite royal ladies, shall we? (Click the designer names to see the whole collection.)

Wouldn't be a couture week without Elie Saab doing what he does best. Ornamentation galore combined with lots of ombré effect gowns (as though Elie Saab alone isn't enough of a weakness for me, I have a peculiar fondness for anything ombré, so I'm all over this). As always, the Luxembourg ladies are our best bet to see this in action, and if we cross our fingers maybe a Swedish princess will dip into the pool too.

Valentino put out a very romantic, Pre-Raphaelite-inspired collection. Keep an eye out for Crown Princess Mette-Marit, Princess Madeleine, Princess Marie-Chantal, Queen Máxima, Sheikha Mozah, and more.

Chanel delivered a typically artistic collection with inspiration from Karl Lagerfeld as intriguing as ever ("brutalist and baroque"). I include the video above for one purpose only: the very last look. I wouldn't be mad at all one of the ladies of Monaco wanted to don that fabulous train, wouldn't be mad at all. Pick any occasion, opening a yacht club, I don't even care. That is amazing.

Giambattista Valli's been rather popular with Crown Princess Mette-Marit of late, and Charlotte Casiraghi's been a fan in the past. I wouldn't mind this collection spreading to some other royal ladies too, with its bright florals and affection for full skirts and capes. You can look no further than the styling to see that it's practically screaming for some attention from Sheikha Mozah (head wraps and sunglasses, hello!).

This is just a selection from some of the designers already in the royal mix. Others to consider:
  • Christian Dior has dressed Queen Mathilde a couple times this year (for her French introductory visit and for the D-Day commemoration - both events in France, a perfect marriage since the French label is currently designed by a Belgian, Raf Simons). What we've seen on Mathilde so far has been totally bespoke and not from the runway, but others like Sheikha Mozah and Princess Haya are runway fans.
  • Armani Privé has been a go-to in the past for some of our royal ladies (Queen Mathilde and Queen Paola for special occasions, for example), though again, it's often totally custom work.
  • I'm still waiting for Ralph & Russo (a British label from two Australians) to make an appearance on our British royals, but Sheikha Mozah's already a fan.
What's on your royal wish list?

Royal Outfit of the Day: May 7

Video: Sheikha Mozah made an official visit to Japan last month.
We haven't had a chance to touch on the glam Sheikha's trip to Japan, so let's use my favorite of that couture parade as a little elegant pick-me-up to get you through the middle of the week. A windowpane print, gloriously modified from the runway to meet modesty requirements. The fullness of the skirt looks so fabulous when seated, I was surprised to discover in the above video that it's actually ankle length. Usually not a length I love, but here it works.
The dress, by the way, is modified from the Christian Dior Spring 2012 Couture runway, a wonderfully feminine collection that also included a couple pieces you may recall seeing on Princess Haya.

Royal Outfit of the Day: February 10

Video: Queen Mathilde accompanied King Philippe for a short introductory visit to France. She wore a pale pink coat with a bow at the shoulder designed by Raf Simons for Christian Dior, paired with a matching hat and Dior handbag.
Obviously, this is a perfect designer-to-event match: Raf Simons is Belgian and he designs for a legendary French label. And it's also a hilarious match (to me), since I just mentioned the possibility of Mathilde in Dior a couple weeks ago when we were chatting about couture. And it's hilarious (to me, again) that even with a different designer, the volume and the bows don't quit. Anyway, I'm glad to see she's chosen something with a vintage Dior feel, as ladylike as can be. It's also very sweet, which suits Mathilde perfectly, and it even improves in movement (see the video above). Well played.
