Royal Outfits of the Day: October 9

First, a programming note: No Tiara Thursday post today. I know, it's a bummer. Instead, I offer you a grab bag of recent (recent-ish...) appearances from some of our leading ladies:

Mary's been really busy lately. Lots of standard fare in the outfit department, with a couple standouts. This gray sheath is really elegant, although it might be crossing the line into too simple territory?
Video: Crown Princess Mary attended the 25th anniversary celebration of registered partnerships for same-sex couples in Denmark
She was in a bit of a simple sheath mood, also sporting a purple number with leopard print shoes as a fun little accent.

Of course, there's animal print and then there's ANIMAL PRINT, and if you want the caps lock version then you need to talk to the caps lock queen.
Queen Máxima visited a social employment agency this week.
I'm suddenly feeling nostalgic for simple gray sheath dresses.

Good thing we can always count on Mathilde to serve as a tranquil tonic to whatever else comes our way, right?
Queen Mathilde accompanied King Philippe on a visit to the Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe last week.
She's making good use of all these similar dresses she ordered, and I'm okay with her making this her signature collar style. She makes it regal.

One more for the road:
Queen Letizia attended the annual Red Cross Fundraising Day yesterday.
I'm developing a serious weakness for a great windowpane print, but I think I'm loving this. It keeps with her style, and yet it's not a plain gray business suit. Yeah, put me down for a thumbs up.

Royal Trip of the Day: September 25

'Tis that time of the year when royals and dignitaries alike flock to New York City, drawn by the United Nations General Assembly session, the Clinton Global Initiative meeting, movie nights with their peers (maybe not), and so on. Of all the royals present, the new King and Queen of Spain seem to be making the most of their trip, so let's catch up on their sartorial adventures. (Okay, well, her sartorial adventures, really. He wore a suit. And also so did she - uh, spoiler alert? - because this is Serious Business, okay.)

Video: The Queen visits a school in Harlem
Letizia wore this basic suit from Hugo Boss - but hey, it's the color of the moment! I'd say she was right on trend, but I don't think a suit this basic has anything to do with trends. The video above is kind of awkward, but you can hear Letizia speaking English (first time I've ever heard her do that, not that I particularly seek out instances of her speaking), and I know some of you like to know what languages our favorites speak. Which is appropriate, since her visit was focused on teaching Spanish and bilingualism in American schools. (Click here for an article with pictures.)

More meetings were taken wearing a customized Felipe Varela suit with panels on the front and back of grosgrain stripes. Her version differs from the retail version in structure details and also in color, opting for a more subdued hue combination. I really love the panels of grosgrain here, adds so much interest to an otherwise boring suit jacket.

I said there was a whole crew of royals in town: Letizia got an opportunity to chat with Queen Máxima too (was it about hair care? I hope it was about hair care).
Máxima, sporting one of her one-shoulder wonders, was in town because she is a special advocate for the Secretary General for inclusive finance.

And finally, while I lied about the movie night thing, there were some occasions for a bit of cocktail dress sparkle. There was a sparkly blue Varela number worn to hang out with the Obamas, and then this little LBD worn at another reception:
Look at the little braid in her hair! Hey, I meant she should talk to Máx about hair care, but if their chat inspired some fun from either one, I'm good with that.

Royal Outfit of the Day: September 18

This one's for those of you that complain that I think Mary never puts a foot wrong.
Video: The Danish royal family attended a dinner for the Red Cross last week.
Several steps wrong, this. A textured mustard dress is a hard sell on its own, if you ask me, and that's before you start throwing accessories at it. And the accessories are where I focus my scrunchy face: a statement cuff and a statement belt and a statement pair of earrings and a statement feather clutch. That's a lot of statements, my friend. (And they don't necessarily agree with each other, these statements, as the clutch and the earrings are frilly and intricate and the belt and cuff are strong and structural.) It looks a lot better in video, mainly because you have less time to see all of those accoutrements. (But click here for a gallery anyway, if you like.)

With that out of the way, we can talk about the outfit that really needs our attention: Henrik, of course. DaisyMobile-driving Henrik and his BOLO TIE. (Sidebar: The Wiki page on the bolo tie amuses me greatly. They are easy to make from attractive flat objects such as Christmas tree ornaments or refrigerator magnets! Excellent.) I hope he wears it for the fictional dinner party I plan on inviting him to, because I have QUESTIONS.
In other news, Joachim and Marie are there (bless her heart, she looks nice, but she's blending into the background) and Daisy pulls out the surprise best-dressed of the night with a dress that flatters her waist just right, each and every one of the thousand times she's worn it.

Oh, and by the way: Heads up, Canada! Mary and Fred have arrived on your fair shores for a visit. Catch 'em if you can, and report back if you do! Yesterday was day 1.
I love it when they do the classic family album pose. "And here we are in Ottawa, kids..."

Royal Outfits of the Day: September 8

Two royal ladies back in black for our Monday:
King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia visited Málaga.
Another little black dress for Letizia - she's got to be our most LBD-prone royal, right? There must be a whole section of her closet devoted to 'em - and this one gives a new definition to the classic mullet dress: business in the front, party in the back. Click here for more pictures.
A similar retail model is available, but Letizia's Felipe Varela dress has been customized.

Mary's take mixes black with a full floral skirt for a more successful version of what we saw Victoria try last week, though this one is made much easier with a shorter skirt and less volume.
Mary's skirt is from the H&M Conscious Collection and her top is from Hugo Boss.
This is Mary doing her usual remix of repeated pieces, but what elevates this - and Letizia's simple LBD too - is some excellent chignon action. That will catch my eye on just about any old outfit, guaranteed, but you already knew that (#TeamUpdo, hey).

Royal Outfit of the Day: August 7

The Spanish royal family posed for the press at the start of their summer holidays at Marivent Palace in Palma de Mallorca.
I would hide behind the girls too, if I forgot to change out of my pajamas before a photocall. Smart move, Letizia.
Leti's drawstring trousers from Hugo Boss. I was dicey on these when they appeared in a fancier fashion, but paired with a simple v-neck tee...nope. Well, not for press business, at least.

Royal Headbands of the Day: May 12

Crown Princess Mary traveled to Norway on Friday, where she joined Crown Princess Mette-Marit to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Heligoland.
This is that outfit that I liked before on Mary, but I liked it better without the hat, but I still prefer Mary's hat to M-M's "hat", which is not a hat but a headband with some stuff on it, if you see what I mean. Anyway: M&M-M's DAY OUT! It's like a Girls' Night Out, but with more pantyhose. (And yes, Mette-Marit is wearing the By Ti Mo dress we saw before, just in a different color. She must have liked it just as much as I did.)

In other fancy headband news...
Also last week, Princess Letizia held audiences at Zarzuela Palace, wearing a Hugo Boss skirt and a headband from children's brand Nanos with stars on the side.
What's this? My stars (see what I did there), what do we have here?! Well, well, well. Is Letizia having a little fun with her outfit for a change, or are her daughters dressing her now? You know what, I think I'm good with either answer.

Royal Outfit(s) of the Day: March 25

Video: The Countess of Wessex visited a hospital last week, wearing a black and white print Giambattista Valli dress under a fitted black blazer.
That busy royal bee Sophie turned in this lovely appearance last week, in the classic combo of black and white, and I generally appreciate the contrast of a solid on top and a print on bottom to liven it up. That's all fine and dandy. But also last week, Princess Letizia did the same (same-ish) thing...
...and NOPE. Is it because that print kinda looks like diamonds and clubs, like she meant to hit the casino first? It is because these trousers have a drawstring? It's just a pants-y turn on La Wessex's outfit, really, so why isn't it working for me? These are life's great mysteries.*

Royal Outfit of the Day: January 9

Crown Princess Mary attended the third day of the New Year's receptions. Queen Margrethe, Prince Henrik, and Crown Prince Frederik were also in attendance.
Aha! A new-and-yet-still-old repeat! Now we've got old pieces combined to make a new court outfit: the striped skirt was worn previously for evening use, and the basic black peplum top from Hugo Boss has been used for day outfits (Mary owns it in white too). She's also dressed it up with a prim updo and a string of pearls around the neck. See, I like this approach. These outfits are tricky to repeat, but combining a little of this and a little of that really works. Clever Mary.

Updated to add: Lots of questions about why she only has one glove on. It's an etiquette thing - it's considered polite to remove the glove to shake hands. The other hand remains gloved and carries the second glove. Not everyone does this, but keep an eye out and you'll see it done this way more often than you think.

Note: This is a new feature! Click here if you missed the announcement.

Royal Trip Report: Denmark and Spain in North America

Everybody is everywhere right now - your typical November surge in events, just before the holidays. Today's installment of Traveling with the Royals joins Mary and Frederik on a visit to Mexico and Felipe and Letizia on a visit to the United States.

When we last checked in on the Danish crown princely couple, they had just arrived for their Mexican visit and Mary was fresh and flowery in a peplum top. Picking up on day 2...

Video: Day 2
...we have another floral-type situation, plus red for the evening. It seems the theme for day 2 was belts.

Video: Day 3
And perhaps the theme for the whole trip was florals, with a darker version on day 3 that remained somewhat hidden under a sweater and coat. Whatever it was - that's it! A short, sweet, and low key trip. The Danish royal news has been occupied with other things, anyway...
A new family portrait by Thomas Kluge was revealed, and it is interesting. And by interesting, I mean a potential cover for Stephen King's next thriller about the boy prince who would stop at NOTHING to take the throne before his time {cue slasher music}. But hey, it's getting attention (as many of you have emailed me, it hit BuzzFeed and other hot spots), and, well, that's not something you can say about every royal portrait. Mission accomplished?

Also out and about are the Prince and Princess of Asturias, who have been visiting California and Florida.
Sassy Letizia came along, too! (Hello, sparkles and hair and earrings and red shoes and red lips, all at once.)

Video: Sassy Letizia in action, also shown third from left above
But I'm boring and am partial to the flattering pale pink suit, myself.

It even goes well with Google Glass, you see.

Which trip outfit was your favorite?

P.S.: Yes, we have many more current events to handle. Stay tuned!
