December Wedding at Stewarts Bay Lodge

December 2016 I provided flowers for a special wedding at Stewarts Bay Lodge on the Tasman Peninsula.  Stewarts Bay Lodge is next to the Port Arthur Historic Site, so many couples choose to have photographs taken in the beautiful gardens that are part of the site.

The bride asked for reds, whites, pinks and greens in her bouquet, and loved lots of cascading foliage.  December 2016 was mild and the summer weather hadn't fully arrived so there were many Tasmanian waratahs still blooming.  They are such a treat to use in a bouquet with their intense red colouring.

For cascading foliage, I used Agonis Flexuosa which is in flower over the summer, with little white star-like flowers along the stems.  This native foliage plant has a lovely weeping habit which means it falls beautifully.   I also used foliage from a sweet smelling Incense Cedar.

Along with the Tasmanian Waratah, I used Scarlet Ribbon Leucospermums, Protea Compacta, and Protea Repens.  Some red and intense pink Callistemons or Bottlebrush flowers were also added.  Dark burgundy Leucadendron Safari Sunset provided contrast.  

For whites, I added Button Bush or Berzelia, with its fluffy white balls of flowers.  Berzelia is a late winter and spring texture plant which flowers in early summer and is usually finished by December.  I also added some white Hebe flowers.

For the two bridesmaids, I left out the Berzelia.  The purple flowers are Isopogon Formosa, also called Cone Flowers.  They are such a gorgeous colour.   Who said natives were brown and boring?!  Isopogons are a spring flowering plant and because of the mild weather in December 2016, they were still flowering for me to use.  

The richness of the colours was really special.  I loved the hot pink Callistemons with their tiny little yellow-green highlights at intervals along the flower.  Even the buds added beauty and texture.

For the groom, there was more of the beautiful Berzelia.

Agonis foliage and flowers, gum, Berzelia, Blushing Bride, and some Leucadendron cones from the Jubilee Crown variety.  

I also made some floral crowns for some of the little girls at the wedding - always so cute!  More of the fragrant cedar foliage, Agonis flowers and Berzelia.  

Table decorations for the reception at Stewarts Bay Lodge were more colourful.  I added peach coloured Fountain Leucospermums.   

I loved the riot of colour and texture in these centrepieces.  The reds, pinks, orange and purple!  

The little pots of colour sat on log rounds on each table.

On a beautiful warm Tuesday in March, this lovely couple tied the knot at Port Arthur Historic Site on the Tasman Peninsula.  The world heritage listed site is a really special place for a wedding.  The ceremony was held in the ruins of the old church and then photographs were taken in the wonderful gardens that cover the site.

Photography by Fred and Hannah really captures the day so fabulously!  That golden sun drenched glow perfectly highlights the playful yellow touches that the couple chose for their day.

I made the bride a simple bouquet with plenty of lush foliage and texture.

Main flowers used were Protea Pink Ice, and Brunia Albiflora in flower.  A Leucadendron Silver Tree cone peeps through in the centre of the bouquet, surrounded by a fine-flowered white hydrangea.  

The small touches of red are the variegated Leucadendron Jester.  Yellow touches were added with Leucadenron Inca Gold,  Leucadendron Pisa and a fine leafed hybrid Leucadendron.  Eucalyptus Risdonii,  a lovely lemon scented Leptospermum, and a blue green cyprus are the foliages used.  For some added texture I used some pittosporum berries which are a great creamy colour and for a finishing touch, some gum nuts from Corymbia Ficifolia.

The grooms boutonniere combined all of the foliages with the yellow Leucadendrons and a gum nut as the focal point.  I love it with that yellow tie!

The lovely bride wanted a floral crown to match her bouquet.  

I used more of the Eucalyptus Risdonii, and wove in some of the flowering Tea Tree.  The fine leafed yellow Leucadendron added warm touches.  I also added some of the Leucadendron Pisa to the front of the crown.  

You can also see some deconstructed Brunia and some flowering gum woven into the crown.

My Week in Flowers

Yesterday, I did some flowers for a wedding at the Port Arthur Historic Site, a world heritage listed historic site - and probably Australia's most famous.  If you've never been there, its definitely worth a visit.  Beautiful, fascinating, and thought provoking.  The locals call it "the Site".  Until the 1980's, it was just part of the local township.  Many of the buildings that are now part of the site were once peoples homes.  It has a fascinating history and its a place I love.  I think it would be a fabulous spot for a wedding. 

These little pots were table decorations for the dining tables.  Simple seasonal Pink Ice Protea with lots of lovely foliage, including some Grevillea, Risdon Peppermint and Thryptomene (not yet in flower but with lovely red flower buds dotted along the stems).  There is also some foliage from Brunia Albiflora - the bright green soft furry stems, and the first of my leuco's for the season.  Red Gem are often my first to be ready.  They are a spectacular colour at this time of the year - new, bright and fresh.  Every year I forget what fabulous colours they can produce and they really took my breath away this week as I picked them.  They glow.

I did some larger arrangements too, but ran out of time to photograph!  Its been a busy week with earthmoving machinery, doctors appointments, orders and a wedding.  

Earlier in the week, as often happens with the floral industry, there was an order to remember the death of a loved one.  Flowers really do say it all!
