Festive Nail Polishes

Nail polishes become one of my favourite things around Christmas time. During the rest of the year, I usually find painting my nails an irritating chore but when Christmas arrives, I can't help feeling completely happy as I spruce up my nails with a red, green or glitter polish.

At the beginning of the month, I attended Clothes Show Live with my best friend, Jess, and I received tonnes more nail varnishes to add to my winter/Christmas collection - a few of which will be included in this mini top 5 post. Enjoy! x

Autumnal Accessory Lovin' | Miss Milly

Autumn is just the best season. Everything becomes so much better at this time of year - the fashion/colours are gorgeous, the nights are darker, Christmas is on its way and it's slightly acceptable to wear all my cosy, childish pyjamas from 4pm onwards! Another thing that has got me hyped up this Autumn are the accessories...let's take a look at a few of my fave pieces from Miss Milly.

Autumn leaves are one of the most common reasons for loving this time of year - I mean, who doesn't love hearing the sound of them crunch beneath your feet? Not the mention the array of mustards, oranges and reds as you walk through forests.

To highlight the beauty of the season, I chose this orange, metallic leaf necklace to wear with each of my beloved knitted jumpers. The elaborately designed,silver-coated veins complement the leaf's warm tone, making the necklace look expensive and unique. This has been my staple necklace throughout October and I couldn't recommend adding it to your collection enough!

This isn't specifically Fall-based, but I thought it was super cute must-have jewellery piece. The love knot bangle is simple, beautiful and a perfect gift for a loved one; it is relatively sturdy and small in wrist size (I struggled slightly to fit it over my hands but is comfortable on the wrist). A great alternative to the pricey Tiffany&Co love knot bangles!

Finally, we have this stunning Purple Resin Ring, new to Miss Milly's online store. If you've been reading for a while, you will know my evergrowing love for large statements rings. This deep purple sparkling edition to my collection is fab for everyday autumnal wear - the ring is easily adjustable and can resized to fit any finger (I always wear mine on my ring or index finger!) Adjustable rings are a huge pro, making them universal for each and every one of you.

Thank you to Miss Milly for collaborating with me and sending me these gorgeous products. All opinions are my own, despite not purchasing them. I am always honest in my reviews!

What are your statement jewellery pieces this Autumn?!

Lots of love

QWERKY EARRINGS //Body Jewellery Shop

Recently, I've been reaching out to jewellery a little more than I used to. I always forgot the endless stacks of necklaces, bracelets and pairs of earrings I had stuffed into a little box. Since going on holiday, I've realised that jewellery can complete an outfit and make it look 10x better. Fortunately, I was contacted by the wonderful people at Body Jewellery Shop who kindly gifted me with three EarPiercing Jewellery for me to try out and give my honest opinion to all of you lot...Let's get cracking!

Body Shop Jewellery have a fantastic range of EarPiercing items that are unique from any jewellery I've seen before; they also hold other piercing products from nose studs to tongue bars if you are bit more exotic than me who only holds two holes in each ear. I must say I'd love more ear piercings and my belly pierced though...

Jewelled Silver Stud - Pink Bow (£3.95)

My first item is a pretty little girly stud that is made of stunning pink jewels. This was my initial go-to sample as like most girls, I'm all for anything girly and subtle like this little gem. The silver framing and stud length really compliment the light pink shade used to create the bow. A fabulous choice for all those who love a bit of extra pink to accessorize with.

Silver Ear Cuff - Dragonfly (£2.49)

Possibly my favourite pick of the three - this fake silver cuff dragonfly is so elegant looking. Personally, I would 100% wear this to a special occasion, I can imagine wearing it to a wedding with my hair swept back and in a light coloured dress. The fragile looking creature could completely impact your outfit, despite its petiteness. I'm a huge fan of the ear cuffed jewellery, even though this is fake and I do not actually have a piercing here. Nonetheless, the dragonfly remains put throughout the day and is very comfortable to wear.

Zircon Steel Clip On Ear Cuff - 2 Rings (£1.99)

The golden cuff above is certainly the opposite of the previous two mentioned. Alternatively, the zircon steel 2-ringed ear cuff gives off an edgy vibe, a complete contrast to the girly products noted earlier. This is very different from my usual jewellery style and that is what I love about it the most - it is UNIQUE to my world. This would look super cool with a golden, chunky statement necklace, a plain tee and a pair of ripped jeans. Hopefully I can find an outfit that will totally bring the edgy side of me out, who knows?! Finally, I thought it was cool that I had a stud to mirror the two balls on the ear cuff (I AM S A D!)

Don't forget to check out Body Jewellery Shop for all of their amazing EarPiercing products and more! They come at an affordable price, as listed above, with a very small postage&packaging on top. The overall quality is excellent and there are no faults I can depict at this stage of wearing them.

Be happy and have a great day...

Princely Party of the Day: March 31

Princely Party of the Day: March 31

The annual Rose Ball to benefit the Princess Grace Foundation was held on Saturday, and the Monaco bunch was out in full force (minus Princess Charlene, who stayed home because Princess Gabriella was ill, apparently). And, I don't know, is it just me, or is this an abnormally tame showing for the crew? Especially for a year when Karl Lagerfeld was in charge of the theme.
Left to right: Charlotte Casiraghi, Karl Lagerfeld, Princess Caroline of Hanover, Prince Albert II of Monaco, Paola Marzotto (Beatrice's mother), Pierre Casiraghi and Beatrice Borromeo
This year's theme was Art Deco, so Beatrice Borromeo's slinky column of liquid platinum was right on point. Charlotte Casiraghi's dress, sort of a day dress with evening wear ambitions (settle down, little frock), was the closest to curious we came...
...and even then, it's good for cutting a rug and it lets her face do all the work, a strategy with which you can never go wrong. Princess Caroline also took the Art Deco theme to heart in her ensemble, most of which I can't really pay attention to, because NECKLACE. And also EARRINGS.
This is her fringe necklace, one of the big family jewels she wears (and which may-or-may-not also be a tiara, you can see my post on that here), and it's nice to see her bring it out for this event. Just a spectacular display of diamond power, and for that I thank her.

Royal Outfit of the Day: September 30

Video: This weekend, Queen Mathilde and daughter Princess Elisabeth attended the Genee International Ballet Competition in Antwerp.
I should like this. Full skirt with an unexpected and interesting tone on tone enlarged snake print detail, killer earrings (look at the sparkle on video!). And yet. AND YET.
Click the link above for a gallery.
Well, this falls into all the sneaky traps of using shiny fabric, doesn't it? Each wrinkle, each area that could use better tailoring, it all gets magnified. The high neckline and unadorned front make one serious wall o' shine. It just seems...stiff, on the whole.
I'd probably love this in coat form, so you could have a non-shiny dress underneath to break things up, or maybe if the neckline wasn't so high and plain. What say you?

Royal Outfit of the Day: May 14

Mary Donaldson attended a banquet hosted by Queen Margrethe at Christiansborg Palace before her 2004 wedding to the Crown Prince.
We've been covering a few of the guests at Frederik and Mary's wedding (with more to come) since this week marks their tenth wedding anniversary, but today we're stepping back a few days to cover a Great Moment in Tiara History: Mary's first ever tiara appearance. (!) You have to love the Danish royals for sticking to their tiara guns - even before wearing a tiara for her wedding, Mary had worn the Danish Ruby Parure for this event and then for the gala concert. Since she was wearing the rubies twice in just a couple days (!), she took two different approaches: emphasizing the rubies with her red gown for the concert worn with her hair down, and emphasizing the diamonds with this number from Malene Birger, worn with her hair up. The gown is a richly patterned silver fabric, almost the palest of ice blues, with a slim front silhouette and a train at the back, topped by a black ribbon and rosette detail.

Video: The banquet
(You should watch that video. If not for Mary, then for this:
Oh Daisy, you glorious creature.)

It's hard to imagine the thoughts that must have been swirling through Mary's head here. (Primarily: How can my sleeves ever possibly measure up?) In her own words:
"That first evening when I wore the ruby set, there was so much new, there was so much overwhelming for me. It wasn't just the jewelry, it was the significance of the whole event, of the whole period, of the whole time which I was going through. So I don't really think I thought so much about what I had on in terms of jewelry except that it felt new and somewhat unusual to have such a significant piece of jewelry on. Everything that was going on at that time was part of a very new and overwhelming time. I mean it wasn't just the jewelry, it was also the dress, I mean I had never worn a dress like this before...the whole thing was overwhelming." - Crown Princess Mary, speaking in the documentary De Kongelige Juveler
Needless to say, she handles it like proper royal champ. Me, I would be doing cartwheels. Mental cartwheels, actually, but only because I'd fall over if I tried the real thing.

Royal Outfit of the Day: March 31

Princess Charlene attended the Rose Ball with the princely family. She wore a blue Akris gown and diamond and sapphire earrings made to match her Ocean Necklace/Tiara. Also in attendance was Princess Caroline, wearing Chanel, right down to the sneakers.
I was all about Charlene's dress - she looks fabulous, really - until I saw what's happening at the bottom. (Can we kill this sheer trend? Can we kill it with fire?) I have thus decided to pretend this look only exists from the waist up.

The rest of the crew was there, including a princess-y Beatrice Borromeo and Chanel-clad Princess Caroline and Charlotte Casiraghi. Click here for a gallery. And yes, your eyes do not deceive you - Caroline was sporting the same sneakers Karl Lagerfeld (designer of the ball) sent down the runway not so long ago, and my prediction that she'd be the royal to try these out came true. I guess she was injured, since she was using a cane, but let's be honest: she didn't need a reason for these.

Royal Outfit of the Day: February 20

King Philippe and Queen Mathilde continued their introductory country visits, spending the day in Italy. Mathilde wore a custom layered Armani dress and jacket with a matching hat. The fabric was seen in different form on the runway at the latest Armani Privé couture show (shown upper right corner).
She wore Armani - of course she wore Armani, she and Queen Paola both have a tradition of using Armani for special events, and this fits the special event definition. Mathilde's really been going all out with these last few introductory visits, and using an Italian designer in Italy fits in perfectly. I would rank this as the most sophisticated look we've seen yet.

Summer Colours

Summer is within reach!  The days are longer and warmer and the first early summer flowering Leucaspermums are starting to bloom.  Leucaspermums are a species of plants within the Protea family.  They are native to South Africa, although here in Australia they are often called "natives".  They do resemble a lot of our Australian Proteaceae - they seem like a cross between a waratah and a grevillea, with a great variety of colours.  Leucaspermums usually flower in late spring and early summer.  Here at Swallows Nest Farm, we have 5 different varieties.  The one pictured is a hybrid called Mardi Gras with bright yellow stamens and red inner petals that give an overall colour of golden yellow.

In bud form, they are silvery and hairy.  Then the bud starts to swell and out pop the stamens exposing both the yellow and the red.  It's an explosion of colour!

Mardi Gras are one of the earlier flowering Leucaspermums that we grow here.  The other is called Scarlet Ribbons.  These two are available from mid November up until Christmas, give or take a week depending on the seasonal weather.  These plants produce a large crop of flowers in a short space of time.

Leucaspermums are long lasting flowers like most proteas, if they are handled correctly.  They must be packed carefully though, because they have a tendency to loose their heads!  The flower can easily pop off the stem if they are handled roughly.

Leucaspermums love to be pruned and will produce many more flowers next year, if this years flowers are picked.  They are ready to pick when the first yellow stamens start to emerge.  They will continue to open once they are in a vase.

I love this early flowering variety that has the colours of summer!

The Silver Tree

At Swallows Nest Farm, we grow one of the most beautiful foliage plants of the proteaceae family.  It's commonly named the Silver Tree, but its actually a Leucadendron with the proper name of Leucadendron Argenteum.  (Just Latin for silver, really!)  It really does look spectacular at this time of year, and provides the most beautiful soft textured foliage with a silvery green colour that perfectly compliments the other proteas flowering at the same time.

The Silver Tree does actually grow to small tree proportions, but if it is picked regularly, like it is in the cut flower trade, it remains at a reachable height.  Some of our trees have been unpruned for a while and we were so excited to find that the female trees began to produce the most spectacular cones.  They begin as a soft silvery green, like the leaves, but look like they are made of metal.  When they dry, you end up with a beautifully structured cone, about the size of a tennis ball, on the end of a long stem.  They make a great statement in a vase, as a dried flower.

The bark of the Silver Tree is unusual too.  In their native South Africa, they were at one stage used as a firewood tree, because they grow quickly and burn well.  It's unusual wood - quite light, but the bark! I think it looks like elephant skin!

It's a remarkable tree, and we love growing it!
