Royal Trip of the Day: May 13

Royal Trip of the Day: May 13

Do you need a midweek pick-me-up? Okay. Let's talk about Harry.
Day 1 of the New Zealand Tour
Following his time with the armed forces in Australia, Prince Harry embarked on a tour of New Zealand that runs through the end of the week. I'm glad we're nearing the final stages, to be honest with you. I've died several times already, and it just keeps getting worse.

In Sydney, before leaving for New Zealand
I take my hat off to the team that plans his tours. Good grief, these people know exaaaactly what they're doing. Harry's on a charm offensive and no woman, man, child, puppy, or cupcake is safe.

Day 4
For heaven's sake, he's even given an interview about wanting to have kids and wanting someone to share the royal grind with. (I know.)

 Day 1
Also, I warned you about the puppies.

Day 5
On the sartorial level, he's managed to stay out of his blue suit for quite a few engagements, which is great. (...Maybe that didn't come out quite right.)
Day 4
Casual wear and baked goods, I don't know what more you could ask for.

Day 4
I mean... {SOUNDS}

Royal Trips of the Day: May 4

Well, if anyone was going to dress up like any part of the fruit basket...
The Dutch King and Queen visited Bonaire for Dia de Rincon.
Shoulda just changed that button jewelry into some little plastic fruits and went the whole Carmen Miranda while she was at it. Missed opportunity.
I'll say this for Queen Máxima: She knows exactly when to let her full CAPS LOCK potential fly. Because her royal banana impression was actually the perfect thing to fit right in with this colorful occasion, while still making sure she stood out as a queen should.

This was a speedy trip for the royal couple to the Dutch Caribbean, who headed for Aruba after their day in Bonaire.
Firstly, where is my tropical drink, hmm? And secondly, this is a hybrid of Mathilde's white Zara dress and Victoria's white L.K.Bennett, and I'm in love. Add this one to the list of frontrunners for my 2015 favorites, because it is perfection.

Wax n' Máx weren't the only ones who decided the time was right to check on the sunnier parts of the kingdom: Princess Beatrix visited Curaçao for an exhibit opening. I like that she adds a little tail to the back of her outfit, like she's throwing a little bone of sartorial interest to those stuck standing behind her.
She also kind of sparkles in the sunshine on video, which is officially the greatest achievement a royal outfit can hope for.

Royal Trip of the Day: March 30

Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary have been on an official visit to Japan on behalf of Greenland, and Mary packed a nice little spring palette for us to review.
To start, this repeated Stella McCartney coat in a pale pink snake print. I actually really like this coat (and I'm not a natural Stella fan, to be honest), but I think it fared better the last time she wore it, with white trousers. Fred wore a suit.
The couple were joined by Princesses Hisako and Tsuguko of Takamado, for a scissor wielding competition to open an exhibit with Greenland artifacts. Mary's repeated Mary Katrantzou landscape print dress (a signature for the designer) was my favorite look of the trip; it has a whole cherry blossom feel to it, and it works with the patterns on the Japanese princesses' gorgeous kimonos without imitating them.
Then there were a couple of plain dresses to round things out. The above outfit took on a day that included lunch with the Emperor and Empress, and the one below was for a dinner with the Crown Prince (and the Crown Princess, I believe, though she did not pose for photographers).
FRED UPDATE: Still wearing a suit. However! He has a range of gray or blue. So that's fascinating.
One final outfit, over there on the right: a Dolce & Gabbana lace dress (per Style of Mary) worn to a concert the first night (not well covered, but here's a video). Basic and bordering on a case of lace fatigue, but it goes so well with the rest of the trip wardrobe, I'll let it fly.

Royal Trip of the Day: November 7

What has Crown Princess Mary been up to lately? Emptying her closet of all available printed items, it seems.
Dolce & Gabbana skirt, Etro coat
All these prints went on a trip with her to South Africa this week, a visit which focused on things like sexual and reproductive health and rights, which Mary is a big advocate for, as well as commercial cooperation between Denmark and South Africa cooperation and the like.
Heartmade dress, Massimo Dutti dress
And this is a great example of a wardrobe hitting just the right note - it's fun to put it all together, but it's not the centerpiece of the trip. Billed-Bladet's YouTube channel has plenty of videos to give you a feel for the visit, such as this one in which Mary makes a new friend:

Blouse from Hugo Boss

This is not a comprehensive round up, but I will include one of my favorite looks, from an evening reception:
I do love a maxi skirt and a big earring. It's just the right mix of formal and informal, no?
Giambattista Valli skirt and gold plated sterling silver earrings from Jewlscph

Mary's world travels didn't stop in South Africa this week. On the way home, she stopped in Geneva at the United Nations.
A conservative we're-doing-business suit is precisely what such a day entails, but I (and Queen Elizabeth II) approve of her choice to liven things up with a little brooch action.
A classy finish to a working week, all in all.

Royal Trip of the Day: September 25

'Tis that time of the year when royals and dignitaries alike flock to New York City, drawn by the United Nations General Assembly session, the Clinton Global Initiative meeting, movie nights with their peers (maybe not), and so on. Of all the royals present, the new King and Queen of Spain seem to be making the most of their trip, so let's catch up on their sartorial adventures. (Okay, well, her sartorial adventures, really. He wore a suit. And also so did she - uh, spoiler alert? - because this is Serious Business, okay.)

Video: The Queen visits a school in Harlem
Letizia wore this basic suit from Hugo Boss - but hey, it's the color of the moment! I'd say she was right on trend, but I don't think a suit this basic has anything to do with trends. The video above is kind of awkward, but you can hear Letizia speaking English (first time I've ever heard her do that, not that I particularly seek out instances of her speaking), and I know some of you like to know what languages our favorites speak. Which is appropriate, since her visit was focused on teaching Spanish and bilingualism in American schools. (Click here for an article with pictures.)

More meetings were taken wearing a customized Felipe Varela suit with panels on the front and back of grosgrain stripes. Her version differs from the retail version in structure details and also in color, opting for a more subdued hue combination. I really love the panels of grosgrain here, adds so much interest to an otherwise boring suit jacket.

I said there was a whole crew of royals in town: Letizia got an opportunity to chat with Queen Máxima too (was it about hair care? I hope it was about hair care).
Máxima, sporting one of her one-shoulder wonders, was in town because she is a special advocate for the Secretary General for inclusive finance.

And finally, while I lied about the movie night thing, there were some occasions for a bit of cocktail dress sparkle. There was a sparkly blue Varela number worn to hang out with the Obamas, and then this little LBD worn at another reception:
Look at the little braid in her hair! Hey, I meant she should talk to Máx about hair care, but if their chat inspired some fun from either one, I'm good with that.

Royal Trip of the Day: August 6

Royal Trip of the Day: August 6

Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary are touring Greenland with their four children.
Video, above.
Cuteness and colorful national costumes all in one?! This trip is the best. The family really seems to be getting in the spirit of things  - the twins are apparently even being called by their Greenlandic middle names, Ivalo for Josephine and Minik for Vincent. They're a walking advertisement for casual sweater style, and I couldn't be more jealous. (Is it fall yet? Summer really doesn't suit me. Nature keeps declining to consider my personal preferences, the nerve.)

Some galleries for your investigation: in national dress, Josephine making a new friend, and more sweaters.
