Early Autumn Wedding in the Huon Valley

 Early March, summer is coming to an end, and the Huon Valley is filled with orchards laden with apples.  The Apple Shed, an old packing shed from earlier days, has been transformed into a cider house with an historical flavour, show casing mementos of the Apple Valley in its hey day and home to Willie Smith Cider.  Its the scene for a wedding that I was thrilled to be involved in.  I was equally thrilled to see the beautiful photographs taken by Michelle Dupont.  


The bride was after an eclectic style with lots of colour.  


Late summer provided plenty of colour choices.  Leucospermum Fountain, the peachy orange Pincushion added warmth to the bouquet.  Three different banksias make an appearance, the creamy Banksia Baxterii or Birdsnest Banksia, The warm yellow Banksia Praemorsa,  and the red Banksia Occidentalis.  


Protea Pink Mink, a Nerifolia with black fringing adds a luxurious touch.  Also making an appearance is a stunning rich red Calla Lily, native to South Africa and a first for me.  I was given some bulbs in a gorgeous range of colours and have been enjoying them in my garden.

 Leucadendron Jester, a variegated Leuco is in season in March.  It was sprinkled throughout the floral designs for this wedding.

The foliage used includes Myrtle Beech, a tasmanian native foliage which grows in the rain forests of western Tasmania.  I also used Irish Juniper foliage, a stunning blue-green that really complimented the colours of the flowers.  For highlights I used some Pittosporum berries.   I like the textural effect they created.    


For the boutonniere I used Myrtle Beech foliage, Irish Juniper and more of the pittosporum berries.

The leucadendrons are Jester, a variegated form of Safari Sunset.  There rich red was great agains the blue of the suits.

 Each boutonniere had a green Corymbia Ficifolia gum nut.  The green nuts are the previous years fruits.  The trees also retain older fruits but they loose the green colouring and look more woody.  I think the green ones really worked in this instance.

The Mother of the Bride wore a Gum Nut corsage too, also using Myrtle Beech foliage, more Irish Juniper, pittosporum berries, Sedum, and a sprinkling of yellow fennel flower.

 No Autumn wedding in the Huon Valley would be complete without some orchard shots!  These are just beautiful!

Just stunning!


Floral decorations for the Apple Shed reception venue were carefully planned by the bride who collected around 60 glass vases and vessels in all shapes and sizes to create groups of arrangements.


Large vases were grouped with smaller bottles and jars, all will a profusion of late summer colours.  


I loved playing with the rich red and orange tones. The additions of juniper and pittosporum berries, and Brunia added texture.  


Some of the little vases were vintage glass.  This little jug looked lovely with a Banksia Occidentalis, Leucadendron Jester, Brunia Albiflora and some Irish Juniper foliage.


The vases and smaller vessels looked so gorgeous and colourful en masse.  It was a pleasure to work on these.  


For a cake topper, I used a Pincushion Fountain as the central flower, surrounded by Sedum, Fennel, Pittosporum berries, green gum nuts, Funiper, Hebe, and Leucadendron Jester.

This wedding was a pleasure to be involved with and I think you'll agree that the stunning photos really  capture a special day.  

February Wedding at Stewarts Bay Lodge

"I love all foliages"  said the bride.  Great for a wedding at Stewarts Bay Lodge, set in the bush right next to Stewarts Bay on the Tasman Peninsula, a gorgeous natural setting!


The lovely bride was after pinks and softer tones to compliment the "nude" colouring of the bridesmaids dresses.  Protea Compacta, Protea White Ice and Protea Pink Ice were the main flowers used.  Secondary flowers were Banksia Marginata, a local native in soft creamy lemon, Brunia Albiflora and some rich pink Corymbia Ficifolia or Flowering Gum.  More difficult to see is Leucadendron Pisa with its silvery cones, Poppy pods, and some soft pink wax flower.


Foliages used include Myrtle Beech, a native Tasmanian foliage, 2 different types of Eucalyptus, one in bud.  Native, locally growing coral fern is also used.  Beautiful Leucadendron Silver Tree foliage is also used, giving shiny highlights.  There is also some Eucalyptus Crenulata, a blue foliage with a slight purple tinge to the tips.

I love candid wedding shots! They really show the emotion of the day.  


For the boutonnieres I used the native coral fern, wax flowers, some deconstructed Brunia and for the groom, some of the pink flowering gum.

The boutonniere for the Father of the Bride was slightly different using a poppy pod, myrtle, gum and flowering gum.


The floral comb for the bride used similar ingredients - native coral fern, wax flower, flowering gum, deconstructed bruina, Eucalyptus Crenulata, and some eucalyptus buds.


Wax flower is such a popular filler flower and you can see why in this hair piece.  It is so delicate but it also lasts well.

The combination of a great hair stylist  (Ben O'Brien) and a great photographer (Island 26 Photography) gives great results!  Its such a privilege to work with talented people.  The beautiful bride looked amazing!


Simple aisle decorations were the only ceremony flowers - a simple mix of foliages and leucadendrons.

Table decorations included rustic log rounds with a trio of vases filled with proteas, foliage and flowering gum.

Its always a pleasure to be involved in a couple's big day, especially when there are so many other great providers to work alongside.  This beautiful shot of the lovely bride just goes to show the results that can be achieved when you have great people to work with.

Peachy February Wedding at Port Arthur

February is a busy month for weddings here in Tasmania.  I started February 2016 with a gorgeous local wedding, held in the old church at Port Arthur Historic Site.  Its the perfect mix of indoor and outdoor, being a ruin with no roof or windows and a carpet of green grass on the floor.  It has great atmosphere for a wedding ceremony.

The couple were local to the area and wanted to use local produce and providers for their big day.  Local, seasonal flowers is what we do here with all our flowers grown on the farm or foraged from the local area, so I was thrilled to be involved.


  The colour scheme was peachy, blush, nude colours in the dresses.   The lovely bride was keen on berries and texture, and wanted soft peachy tones while avoiding lots of "green".  


Eucalyptus Crenulata is a gorgeous foliage we grow here.  It has a purplish tinge to the new growth as well as providing that much-loved eucalyptus "blue".  It's new growth had hardened off enough for it not to wilt, so it became my main foliage I used throughout.  I used some beautiful Leucadendron Silver Tree too, that shimmers and creates great highlights in a bouquet.  


Five bridesmaids meant 6 bouquets all up.  They looked great all lined up …

And the continuity of the bouquets really tied the bridal party together with the different styles and colours in their dresses.

The main flower used in the bouquets is a Leucospermum or Pincushion called Fountain.  They are a summer flowering Pincushion here at Swallows Nest Farm.  They begin flowering in late December and continue through January, February and even March.  


When they first begin to flower, they have a lovely peachy apricot colouring.  As the flowers open more and age, the colour deepens.  I made sure I used the lighter, just opening blooms to give the peachy colouring.  I teamed them up with some Protea Pink Ice.  


You can see some ruby red blackberries peeping out from the foliage.  Blackberries are everywhere in late summer in Tasmania.  They grow along fence lines and beside the road.  I really enjoyed adding them to the design of these bouquets - they added texture, colour, and a definite sense of time and place.  You can also see some creamy peach Buddleia flowers and the beautiful flower spikes of a Clethra that has beautifully fragrant white flowers on apricot tinged stems.

For the corsages I used more Eucalyptus Crenulata, blackberries and Clethra flower spikes.  These also had some beautifully textured wattle buds and a silvery white Leucadendron Pisa cone.


The men's corsages had E. Crenulata,  Leucadendron Silver Tree, wattle flowers buds, blackberries and gum nuts.  


One of my favourite things about this wedding was doing the floral crowns for the flower girls.  They were a satisfying combination of silvery blue tea tree, Clethra, wattle flower buds and blackberries.  I loved the combination of colours and the overall texture of the crowns.  I bet they looked cute on the girls too!



The bride wore a half-crown with the same combination of flowers, but with some Eucalyptus Crenulata added.  Blackberries topped it off.

They look so happy!  


The reception venue was just down the road from the Port Arthur Historic Site at Port Arthur Lavender.  Its a great venue surrounded by rows of lavender with a great view out across the water.

The tables were decorated with long leafy swags dotted with blackberries, elderberries and other lovely textures, and a splash of colour with a Pincushion.

A celebration of summer goodness. 


The cake topper combined E. Crenulata, wattle buds, Clethra, blackberries and a peachy Leucospermum Fountain.
