Stonefield Wedding in March

For a March wedding at Stonefield, just north of Hobart, the bridal party were in shades of steel grey and black.  The bride and groom had a love of natives and the outdoors and wanted their flowers to reflect that, especially using juvenile eucalyptus foliage with its gorgeous blue grey colouring.

Steel grey, black and red are always a stunning combination so I teamed up the requested foliage with some proteas and banksias in rich reds and pinks.

The main flowers were a rich pinky red Protea Repens, and red Banksia Occidentalis.  The bride's bouquet also had a Protea Compacta in pink and red, and a Protea White Ice.

Other flowers include flowering Brunia Albiflora, Leucadendron Discolour, and some Safari Sunset Leucos.

The beautiful silky Leucadendron Silver Tree was one of the mix of foliages I used.  Eucalyptus Crenulata has a gorgeous silvery grey colour and it was the main foliage ingredient.  Juvenlie Risdon Pepperment foliage was also sprinkled through.

For the floral comb, I used a mix of foliages and some smaller flowers in colours matching the proteas of the bouquets.  I love to use Pittosporum berries and these are a light sage green and come from a variegated leaf Pittosporum.

The boutonnieres were all in greys, and were all slightly different.  Brunia, both flowering and not flowering, gum nuts, and the purple-tinged Leucadendron Discolour.

They always look so lovely all lined up!

The groom had a bit of colour to his boutonniere, with the addition of a Leucadendron Safari Sunset.  The new season's growth is always such a fresh, rich colour.

I loved playing with muted greys, greens and reds for this wedding.  I always enjoy the challenge of creating something completely unique for each couple who I work with, and this was no exception.

The Queen and Remembrance Sunday

The Queen will not lay a wreath at the Cenotaph on Remembrance Sunday this year. It's been announced that Elizabeth II will instead watch the ceremony from a balcony overlooking Whitehall while the Prince of Wales places her tribute, on behalf of the nation, at the foot of the memorial to those who have died for their country. It is a major moment in the reign of Britain's longest serving monarch.

The Queen has missed the service at the Cenotaph before but this is a new departure. For the first time she will be present but as an observer as her son and heir performs one of the central acts of the royal year.

It is understood that the Queen's decision reflects another major change in the Royal Family's life this year. The Duke of Edinburgh retired from public life in August but he will attend the Remembrance Sunday commemoration, watching from a balcony overlooking Whitehall. The Queen wants to be at his side and so the 91 year old monarch and her 96 year old consort will watch their son, just days short of his 68th birthday, take on a responsibility filled with symbolism and significance.

The Prince of Wales is performing more of the roles belonging to his mother, undertaking overseas visits on her behalf. But taking the helm at this most symbolic of national acts is another matter altogether. The service at the Cenotaph is an integral part of British life and a bedrock of the House of Windsor. It was created by the Queen's grandfather, George V, and in the almost 100 years since, the head of the House of Windsor has led the nation in remembrance. Now, it is time to change.

That doesn't alter the fact that the Queen clearly deeply feels the pain and loss commemorated at the Cenotaph and her thoughts and prayers will be with those gone and those they leave behind as much this year as any. But the sight of Elizabeth II watching on while another performs this most solemn duty will have a significance few will fail to see.

State Dinner Sparklers: Netherlands to Portugal

It's been a while. There is a distinct lack of sparkle during the royal summer as the State Visit quota drops and the tiaras are dusted down and stored away safely through most of August and September. But fear not, glitter season has returned. As October gets under way, King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima of the Netherlands are on a State Visit to Portugal and that means one thing. A State Banquet and a dose of diamonds to cheer us all up. Here's the tiara chosen by Maxima to get the autumn glitter going.

Maxima was the queen of green at the banquet offered in honour of the royal visitors by the President of Portugal, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa at the Ajuda National Palace on the evening of October 10th 2017. The Dutch consort chose a green lace off the shoulder gown and added the some of the family's famous emerald jewels, including a rather striking tiara, to complete the look.

These stones could quite happily call themselves the Wilhelmina Emeralds and get away with it. The stones in this tiara arrived in the Netherlands in the 18th century via Wilhelmina of Prussia who married William V of Orange and ended up all but ruling for him. At the end of the 19th century they were turned into the tiara we know today for the new and very young Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands. They've been a staple of the Dutch royal collection ever since.

This tiara is a bit of a Maxima go to - when a queen suits green this well, it would be wrong not to let the emeralds do the talking from time to time. Add to that the other parts of this rather stunning parure, including that necklace with that central emerald, and everything about this says regal. We might have missed the sparkle over the summer but Maxima has ensured that the State Visit glitter business has got under way again in style.

Kate's return

The Duchess of Cambridge has returned to public engagements for the first time since announcing she was expecting another baby. Kate made her reappearance at an event for World Mental Health Day held at Buckingham Palace on October 10th 2017.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge along with Prince Harry hosted a reception at the palace for individuals and organisations working across the UK in the field of mental health. The cause has, of course, been a major one for all three royals over the past eighteen months since they launched their Heads Together initiative to put the spotlight on mental health issues.

Kate's been given a lot of the credit for the project by her hubby. In a speech at an earlier reception today, William said that Kate had originally realised that all three young royals were doing a lot of work embracing different elements of mental health and suggested it would have more impact if they gave it a united front.

The Heads Together initiative has seen the royal trio take on joint and individual engagements to highlight different issues around mental health. This latest reception saw people working in all fields across the UK come together for a reception to mark World Mental Health Day.

There was also a lot of excitement as it marked the first appearance of the Duchess of Cambridge since she confirmed baby number three was on the way. Kate has had Hyperemesis Gravidarum, as in her previous pregnancies, and has been out of the public eye while being treated for the condition. It's understood that it is still affecting her - as with George she has returned to public engagements before it has completely passed. With Charlotte, her first appearance came almost seven weeks after the pregnancy announcement and Kate admitted to feeling much better at that time.

So this was Cambridge baby bump debut number three and, as is to be expected when expecting number three, there was a definite hint of a rounded tummy as Kate's pregnancy progresses. Don't get too excited about the baby blue lace dress (by Templerley London). Kate is probably still less than twelve weeks into her pregnancy so determining the gender of baby Cambridge number three is still a guessing game.

It's provided another opportunity for the royals to  highlight the importance of mental health. There is little doubt that this engagement would have won a lot of coverage anyway but interest has risen because it's the duchess' debut after that baby announcement that took so many by surprise. Kate's return is a winner all round.

Sweden's royal baby: Gabriel and brotherly love

Prince Gabriel of Sweden might only just have turned one month but he's already got a friend for life. As the newest royal on the continent debuts in official photos, his big brother Alexander is on hand to help him through. They are already an adorable royal double act and then some.

When Gabriel was born, his dad had a very special way of announcing it. He told the waiting press that ''Alexander has a little brother''. Since then, Alex has been as much the star of this show as Gabriel with the first official photos backing that up. In the main image, Prince Alexander is in the arms of his mum while his dad gazes happily at him. Gabriel features in another photo, too, where he is cuddled by Princess Sofia while Prince Carl Philip looks on.

It's the second time we've had a good look at the littlest prince in Europe since his arrival. He was featured in a snap taken by dad soon after his birth. These latest photos are by Erika Gerdemark. Gabriel Carl Walther, Duke of Darlana was born on August 31st 2017, the second son of Prince Carl Philip and Princess Sofia of Sweden. He is sixth in line to the throne of Sweden and will be christened on December 1st 2017 at the Chapel of Drottninghom Palace.

Kate's baby debut number 3

Twenty four hours and counting. On October 10th 2017, the Duchess of Cambridge will make her first public appearance since it was announced she is expecting her third baby next year. Which means tomorrow is the first glimpse of Kate's baby debut number three. With her past two pregnancies, Kate revealed there was a little Cambridge on the way very early on owing to the Hyperemsis Gravidarum which affected her. It's thought to be much the same this time round - apart from William telling everyone just a few weeks ago that the couple might be seeing their midwives sooner than we think. The interest in the royal tummy will be huge tomorrow as every sign of a bump will be checked out and pored over. Here's how Kate made her mama to be debuts with George and Charlotte.

Kate's first appearance after the announcement of her first pregnancy came on December 6th 2012 when she left hospital with William after being admitted for treatment for the severe sickness affecting her. We got a brief pose on the steps of the King Edward VII hospital and if there was any sign of a baby bump (there wasn't), a carefully placed posy of flowers made sure it was well hidden.

Second time around, the Duchess of Cambridge's debut as a mama in waiting came as she helped welcome the President of Singapore and his wife to the UK for a State Visit in October 2014. As is to be expected with a second baby following so soon after a first, Kate's tummy was more rounded even in the early stages of her pregnancy. And she was all smiles, telling her guests she was just pleased to be able to leave the house  again.

Kate's last appearance before this pregnancy announcement came on August 30th when she joined William and Harry for a tour of the White Garden at Kensington Palace ahead of the 20th anniversary of the death of Diana, Princess of Wales. She knew then that another Cambridge was on the way but when we see her again, at a reception on October 10th, everyone else will know too. Get ready for lots of photos as Kate makes her baby debut number three.

February Wedding at Steeles Island

February is a busy month for weddings in Tasmania and the dates book out early.   The bride for this February Wedding was super organised and had planned everything well ahead.   But a last minute change to the bridesmaid dresses changed the flower colours and we ended up with the combination of peach and plum.

Pincushion Fountain was the main flower that I used.  Grouped together the orange makes a bold statement.  The bridesmaid dresses were covered in a very large floral print in orange, purple and green - so a bold statement was called for.

Acacia Bailyana, or Cootamundra Wattle, is a gorgeous native foliage that is wonderful to use in bouquets.  It comes in two colours, a beautiful eucalyptusy blue-green, and a purple.  I was able to use the purple foliage for these bouquets which give a wonderful misty purple texture.

The brides bouquet included some Protea Pink Ice.  I love the way the purple centres of the Pink Ice are brought out with the purple surrounding them.

Poppy pods peep out from amongst the flowers.  I love them!

Other foliage used is the Leucadendron Silver Tree.  Each bouquet also had Brunia Albiflora and some large native fern leaves.

The brides bouquet also included some clusters of berries.  Such a beautiful colour!

The lovely bride was so organised she had purchased her vases almost a year before the wedding.  The copper colour of the geometric vases went well with the orange, purple and silvery blue green of the flowers.

I grow Brunia Albiflora sourced from two different nurseries here at Swallows Nest Farm, and have ended up with 2 slightly different colours.  For this wedding, I used the more browny purple Brunia.

More native ferns, purple Acacia Bailyana, Pincushion Fountains, some rosy Jubilee Crown Leucadendron cones, Silver Tree foliage, Risdon Peppermint foliage, and light purple Caspia.

For the cake 'topper' this arrangement was to sit against the base of the larger bottom tier of the cake.  I love the fern leaf in this design.

This little mini-bouquet was laid on the top tier of the cake.

It was a pleasure to play with such beautiful bold colours and to be involved in this couple's happy day.

I wish them all the best for their future together.
