Royal Outfits of the Day: March 17

So, Queen Letizia: What's she been up to? Well, you know. By day, the basics. By night, the Letizia spin. Observe:
Yesterday, Queen Letizia had a meeting with UNICEF in Madrid.
Basic jackets with added texture has been the theme for her recent daywear examples.
Last week, she donned an oft-repeated Uterqüe blazer for a visit to Zaragoza.
Which is all fine and good for your regular working business, but we're after a little more pizzazz here. And so we turn to the evening...
Last week, the King and Queen attended an exhibition opening.
Well, this is...pizzazz-y, sure enough. I can practically hear the pearls a-clutching at a queen in a jumpsuit (it's from Mango) but I think she's sorta pulling this off - I mean, let's face it, if anyone in our usual roster is going to pull off a jumpsuit look, it'll be Letizia. Of course, she also sort of looks like she was enjoying an afternoon in the royal garage indulging her mechanic hobby when someone tossed her a pair of earrings and some shoes and told her to get a move on, so there's that.

The King and Queen attended a tribute concert for terrorism victims last week.
On another night, a repeated Felipe Varela top (previously worn with a white skirt) paired with black trousers. I did prefer the lightness the white skirt added, but this attempt at sedate but sparkly seems in order for this particular event.

Also, they went to the opera on Friday night.
And finally, continuing the evening trouser trend, an Adolfo Dominguez draped top with Hugo Boss tuxedo trousers (you remember those from her lady tux moment) with big ol' pendant earrings from Yanes. This one's not capturing my imagination much, but it is nice to see some Spanish brand names overall, besides Varela. This is more designer variety in a week for her than we've seen in a while, and that's something of note.

Royal Outfit Grab Bag of the Day: March 11

Hello and welcome to another edition of "Hmm, What Else is Going On?" I will be your host, and this is my random selection of outfits for chitchat:

Here's Queen Mathilde, with King Philippe, paying a visit to the Vatican and Pope Francis on Monday and exercising her privilège du blanc for the first time. Queen Robocop used a combination of crutches and a wheelchair to get around due to her knee injury, as she has been doing of late, but still managed to look incredibly elegant. Respect. I'm such a sucker for simple designs in white.
I love that she chose a veil - because when don't I love a veil? - but this one was rather in your face. And I mean that literally, because it was obstructing one side of her face in several photos. Maybe she's just really getting into her Robocop groove, and can only show one side of her face at a time.

Here's Queen Máxima kicking off the Week of Money for schools on Monday. She really likes this swing coat, and I really like it when it's open, at least. Anyway, the beige base left space for her statement jewelry:
Which is...alive? Possibly? That necklace clearly has ulterior motives. I'm scared. Moving on...

Here's Mary opening Grønningen's 100th anniversary exhibition this weekend, and her skirt is also alive, amoeba-style. Actually it's a paisley pattern, and it's from Joseph.
.
I mean, what can you say? Typically elegant. Totally Mary.

Royal Event of the Day: March 10

Royal Event of the Day: March 10

Yesterday was Commonwealth Day, and three Windsor couples came out to mark the day at the annual observance service at Westminster Abbey.
Leading the pack in beige tweed, the Queen repeated a Karl Ludwig coat and Angela Kelly hat. Her brooch coordination was excellent here, with the Gold Filigree Brooch (a relatively new bauble that first appeared in 2012) picking up the flecks of gold in the fabric. You can read about the brooch and the rest of Her Maj's jewels for the day (she also attended an evening reception) over at the Vault. She was accompanied by the Duke of Edinburgh. He wore a suit.
My best dressed for the event, believe it or not, was the Duchess of Cornwall. This blue Bruce Oldfield ensemble is quite flattering for Cams, with just a touch of richness from the velvet trim. And I'd say that even without the threat of an attack from her pet snake, wrapped in velvet and curled up around her Philip Treacy hat.
She accessorized with her favorite pair of pearl earrings and one of her famous pearl and diamond chokers (the larger of the two with all diamond clasps that she regularly wears). She was accompanied by the Prince of Wales. He wore a suit.
And finally, the Duchess of Cambridge, who arrived awash in pale pink. Her Jane Taylor hat was new (honestly, though, she has such a collection of these percher hats in beige and pinky beige and light pink that they all started blending together quite some time ago) and her bespoke McQueen coat was a repeat from her last pregnancy. The highlight of the appearance for me? A new pair of earrings from Kiki McDonough, morganite drops on small diamond hoops. More pink jewels always, please and thank you.
Oh, and she was accompanied by the Duke of Cambridge. He wore a suit.

Your turn: Your best dressed for the day?

Royal Outfit of the Day: February 24

I was excited to see the Oscar party scene yield a pair of familiar faces:
Crown Prince Pavlos of Greece and Princess Marie-Chantal attended the 2015 Vanity Fair Oscar Party
I was slightly less excited to see Princess Marie-Chantal's gown, sadly. Listen, I consider myself a fan of her style; even when I don't like the exact pieces she selects, there's an easy elegance to her styling that I admire - she manages to make interesting choices without looking like she's playing dress up. But this Alexander McQueen dress seems doomed from the start. I'm not sure any amount of tailoring can make this satin behave when it clearly wants to make all kinds of folds and puckers at the slightest sign of movement or curve. But I still like the softness of the color palette and the floral design.
As shown in the Alexander McQueen Pre-Fall 2014 collection, far left; and in the retail version, full-length in ivory satin with floral embroidery in nude and silver.
Another part of the reason I like following Marie-Chantal's looks was well on display in spite of all that: her jewels. She has a collection of unusual pieces and she doesn't make them wait for a vanilla outfit to go on parade. These earrings, which I believe are from JAR, one of her favorites, are a great touch to bring out the pink tones in the dress. Yet another piece for me to covet...

P.S.: My fave from the Oscar after parties? Diane Kruger, making me love a red jumpsuit in Donna Karan Atelier. That's some serious style power, right there.

Royal Feathers of the Day: February 9

Royal Feathers of the Day: February 9

Hey, remember this Máxima getup?
Well, you knew this was going to happen eventually:
Queen Mathilde attended an opera in Brussels on February 3.
Consider me sincerely disappointed that Mathilde didn't get a white version so we could finally get that royal production of Swan Lake I've been hoping for, featuring Queen Odette and Queen Odile.
Despite my ballet disappointments, I rather like this on Mathilde. Feathers are always good for a giggle, but this is a nice neckline for her and the intricate updos she favors. Also, her chosen color is the perfect reason to bust out these earrings:
Can't be mad at that.

P.S.: Anybody else thinking about Saved by the Bell right now? Anyone? {Crickets}

Royal Suits of the Day: February 2

I see the love affair between Letizia and her trouser suits is going strong, for better or for worse.

For better:
The King and Queen of Spain attended an audience followed by an evening event,
hence the fanciness.
Saucy lady tux, bit of color on the shoes, fancy hair, killer earrings, sign me up. This is hot.
Separates from Hugo Boss

And for worse:
The day before, they attended a tourism fair.
No. She's worn this before, but back to back with the look above, it's hard to believe this is the same lady in a suit from the same label. Serious case of hotness whiplash right here.

Royal Style Twins of the Day: January 15

Royal Style Twins of the Day: January 15

Queen Letizia made an appearance at the Telefónica Ability Awards this week in a classic black and white ensemble, including a high-waisted full black skirt, a white Hugo Boss top, black heels, and her de Grisogono black diamond earrings. (The earrings are an older pair that have made a recent reappearance, no doubt part of her quest to stake out her position as the Earring Queen.)
I don't know about you, but it always takes me a moment to recognize Letizia in a full skirt - a sheath dress, sure, you'd know that was Letizia from a mile away, but this kind of skirt makes me do a double take. Especially in an outfit like this, which looks a whole lot like one we've already seen elsewhere:
These two ladies have quite a bit of wardrobe cross over, actually, since they're both big fans of Hugo Boss. Crown Princess Mary wore her version of this basic combination during her visit to Canada in 2014, and her skirt (made of a more textured fabric than Letizia's) is from Danish designer Signe Bøgelund-Jensen. No matter who wears it, this is a plain enough combination, and you need something to add some interest. Letizia went for a red lip and those earrings, while Mary opted for snakeskin Louboutins and a thin belt to accent the skirt's thick waistband. Still, I'm not sure either version is particularly memorable. Et toi?

Royal Outfit of the Day: January 7

The first formal event of the year for the King and Queen of Spain was held yesterday, the first Pascua Militar (a military ceremony) of Felipe's reign.
Letizia repeats outfits a lot for this event; the formal dress code requires a long dress, but it's during the day so an evening gown isn't really the thing, and that often means special selections which are understandably worn again. This year's repeat was brand new just last year, a Felipe Varela teal number with motifs on the sides. It's a plain dress when you're standing straight forward, and an embellished one when you turn to the side, a two-for-one deal. What a bargain.
A do-over dress leaves me free to contemplate the earrings, and I am intrigued. She's worn these before, in Rome in November last year (I feel really weird calling 2014 last year, by the way), but this is the first time I've paid them the attention they deserve.
These are from Tous, a Spanish jeweler she wears often, and they have emerald, chrysoprase, green tourmaline, turquoise, ruby, opal, and pink quartz, all in 18-carat yellow gold. Half a rainbow for one side of the head, half for the other. LOVE. The Earring Queen wins again.

Royal Closet Raid of the Day: December 12

Congratulations are in order for the Monaco bunch! Prince Albert and Princess Charlene welcomed their twins on Wednesday. They'll be officially introduced to the people of Monaco on January 7. The announcement from the palace:
It is with immense joy that TT.SS.HH the Prince and Princess of Monaco have the great pleasure to announce the birth of Their children named:

- Gabriella, Thérèse, Marie (born at 17h04)

- Jacques, Honoré, Rainier (born at 17h06)

The births took place on 10th December 2014 at the Maternity of the Princess Grace Hospital Monaco.
The Princess and the Children are doing well.

The Prince Jacques, Honoré, Rainier is the Crown Prince. In accordance with the historic custom established by the treaty of Péronne (1641), He shall receive the title of Marquis of Baux (in Provence).
The Princess Gabriella, Thérèse, Marie, second child in the line of succession, shall receive the title of Countess of Carladès (in Auvergne).
Welcome to the world, Gabriella and Jacques! (I'm digging the names, by the way.)

In this particular corner of the world, we celebrate with fabulous outfits, and I've been saving up Charlene's day in the closet raiding spotlight for just such an occasion. Do you enjoy beige, hmm? How about black? Then it's your day in the spotlight too. As for me, I think you know what color I'm heading for.
I can still only echo what I originally said about this appearance: Char killed it. How could she not, in a dress so fab? I'd like to try it out for myself, so you can bag this one up for me.
Throw the gems in there too, pretty please.
On the Ralph Lauren runway. I approve of her color change.
Your turn:
What are you coveting from Charlene's wardrobe?

One more piece of news from Monaco: Hello reports confirmation from an "insider" that Princess Caroline's son, Pierre Casiraghi, will wed his longtime love, Beatrice Borromeo, on April 20, 2015. We're still waiting to see if an official confirmation will be issued by the family.

P.S.: Yesterday's Nobel post was updated late with the second evening of festivities, so check back if you haven't already!

Royal Trip of the Day: December 10

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have been on a trip to New York City this week, culminating in the St. Andrews 600th Anniversary Dinner last night.
A trip full of new outfits (coats, mostly coats) and wouldn't you know - it's the repeat that catches my eye.
I liked this Jenny Packham the first two times we saw it, and now with added jewels and an updo, what's not to love?
The Duchess debuted new emerald and diamond earrings with a matching emerald and diamond bracelet. The pieces were private gifts. Based on new pieces given to other family members by Middle Eastern monarchies, I wouldn't be shocked to hear these have the same origin, but that's just guessing. They look pretty modern to me, and those are pretty big emeralds with a lovely bright color.
And there's that updo - aw, it's like she knew we'd demand a proper look at those earrings - with a bonus Princess Eugenie sighting! The NYC resident was kind enough to come and say hello to her cousins. A better look at her color blocked gown:
I really can't decide if all those angles help or hurt the situation, but I'm leaning towards a thumbs up. Et toi?
