Royal Outfit Grab Bag of the Day: June 26

In which we explore some totally unrelated Things About Which I Have Thoughts for the week:

Queen Máxima attended a conference, June 22
See, when you overdo it with the accent color, you lose the delight of an accent color in the first place.

Princess Marie-Chantal of Greece (with the Marquess of Douro) at the Ralph Lauren & Vogue Wimbledon Party, June 22
M-C's got it down. The unexpected pink of the purse is the whole point.

Princess Beatrix at a sailing event, June 20
Visor Alert: Queen Princess Beatrix helms her own ship (De Groene Draeck, the Green Dragon) and her bouffant bends for no occasion.

Queen Rania hosted women for iftar at Raghadan Palace, June 21
Oh, this Roksanda Ilincic frock is such a perfect dress-to-wearer match. I appreciate an Ilincic done simply even more after that recent Ascot episode.

Crown Princess Mary (with her plus one, Fred) attended the Reumert Awards honoring the Danish performing arts, June 21. Click here for a gallery.
I saw some clips of this show. I got the impression it wouldn't have made much more sense even if I did speak Danish, which I don't. But that makes it a great occasion for this outfit, which is a long dress with a long kimono on top (from Rabens Saloner).
It's the perfect outfit for swanning about one's lanai all day, before heading out for an evening of baffling theater. I'd take the whole ensemble home, no problem. And I'm not just saying that because I need those Portuguese gold filigree earrings in my life rightthissecond.

Royal Pre-Wedding Flashback of the Day: June 12

The festivities for Prince Carl Philip and Sofia's wedding start today (Friday), with a pre-wedding dinner this evening. We'll be back later for that. Until then, shall we revisit one of the most epic royal pre-wedding looks of all time?

On the night before Crown Princess Victoria and Daniel Westling's wedding, the Swedish royal family and their guests attended a dinner and concert. Victoria's look for the evening is one of my all-time favorite royal looks, because it's just the most...everything. Everything here is the MOST (and also, the BEST).

The most couture of couture dresses, a true example of the craft both in terms of workmanship (all that embellishment!) and in customization (an Elie Saab classic, similar to looks from the Spring 2010 Couture runway, but made bespoke for Victoria).

The most elaborate earrings, an impressive set created from a pair of diamond epaulettes (ornamental shoulder pieces often used on a military uniform) and worn for the first time at this event.

The most fabulous use of the family's heirloom diamond arrow brooch. Cupid's arrow, indeed!

The most dashing train attendant of all time. Who needs a lady-in-waiting when you have a husband-in-waiting, amirite?

Oh and also: the most adorableness. Whatever you do, don't forget the awwwwwww...
It's kinda rare to have pre-wedding events with as much fanfare as Victoria and Daniel did (she is the crown princess, after all; her siblings did/will have private dinners instead), thus making this level of MOSTness appropriate. But that's okay. This one deserves to be unique.

Programming Note: Today's a multiple post day, oh la la! Scroll down for a second outfit post (if you dare) and as I said at the top, we'll also be back later to chat about this evening's pre-wedding dinner in Sweden.

Royal Event of the Day: June 5

Yesterday, the Danish royal family gathered to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the 1915 Danish constitution, in which women were given the right to vote. And the outfits were...

Queen Margrethe
...pretty standard. Leave it to Daisy to sweep in like she's running an errand after work, coat flapping in her breeze.

Princess Marie and Prince Joachim
...pretty metallic. This is a lot of mixed metals, when you throw in the breastplate situation plus the sparkly shawl plus the sparkly shoes. Too many mixed metals, for moi. That dress shape does work well with her shorter hairdo, though.

Crown Princess Mary and Crown Prince Frederik
...and pretty fabulous. You might not love Mary's dress as much as I do, but I love it enough for us both. You see, I've been lusting after these Burberry Prorsum silk georgette dresses in all their different forms for a while now (see: Maggie Gyllenhaal and Olivia Palermo in Mary's version, or Naomie Harris and Kirsten Dunst in a solid color version). They're very flowy, and romantic, and all of that stuff. And pairing this with the Valentino Rockstud shoes, a nude pump but with some bite? Perfection.
Also of note, the group shown here will all be in Sweden for the big wedding! Maybe Margrethe was in a rush to get home and polish her tiara.

Royal State Visit of the Day: June 4

Royal State Visit of the Day: June 4

The King and Queen of Spain have finally embarked on their delayed first state visit abroad to France, and it has been a festival of new outfits. And it's all...fine. Appropriate! Check mark, passing grade. I mean, there's nothing much here that's flipping my skirt up, but perhaps you'll have better luck...

Does déjà vu equate to a French tribute? Because that's what I've got here. A new Felipe Varela outfit, but the same blergh-y feel as the thing she wore for their introductory visit to France.

Also from day 1, this repeated Carolina Herrera skirt is better in action. If I were Letizia, I'd demand people only photograph me while descending grand staircases.

Following in the footsteps of Queen Silvia's approach to the French-set totally boring state banquet dress code, I shall give Letizia her due credit for dressing as fancy as possible, right up to the hairdo and the new earrings. A slightly sparkly and heavily embellished Felipe Varela was a step above what anyone else sported. The men wore suits.

I don't really understand this combo, this coat with this color of suit underneath. Well, I don't understand orange-y reds and sleeveless suits to start with, so I'm left clinging to the coat.

This, on the other hand, is a safari for which I would gladly sign up.

Royal State Visit and Tiara Watch of the Day: May 28

The King and Queen of the Netherlands have begun their state visit to Canada, and...well, friends, the unthinkable has happened. The Queen of Muchness has out-much-ed herself.
Most people overdo it with the loud stuff, the brights and the sparkle. Not Queen Máxima. She managed to overdo it with a sedate material in a sedate color: navy lace, and way too much of it. Why bother with the "coat" in the first place, I ask you?
In theory, I like the idea of a splash of hot pink with navy lace. In practice, the superfluous lace coat messes and muddies the whole thing up. In theory, this hat is great and just the sort of huge thing Máx can pull off (and she has indeed pulled this same hat off in the past, wonderfully). In practice, the pointless peignoir has already added so much fuss and bulk to the outfit, the hat just drags it down even more.
Hat pin weapon level: ARMED AND READY. Click here for a video.
Ah, well. At least we have the tiaras. The tiara. Singular. The Ruby Peacock Tiara, a nice choice for a black tie state banquet where we're just happy to see any tiara whatsoever.
See? Look how excited everyone is to see the tiara. Tiaras spread joy. It's also possible she just did a shimmy off camera for everyone, because how could you not in this dress?

QUESTION: Approximately what percentage of the clothes in Máxima's closet are tailor-made for shaking it, would you say?
After the darkness of the day outfit, I'm thrilled to see her back in brights - and it is not going unnoticed here that she's got a full day color scheme going, with the pink accents in the day (with ruby and diamond earrings) and the full out pink and ruby scheme at night. This is more like the Máx I love to love. More of this as the visit continues on, please.

Programming note: No Tiara Thursday today. Instead, we have this tiara in action and some tiara fun coming up tomorrow!

Royal Trip of the Week: May 27

Royal Trip of the Week: May 27

Queen Letizia is currently on a visit to Honduras and El Salvador, focusing on projects with Spanish cooperation. This is her first such trip (she really only started solo international trips after Felipe became king), but she's taking over from Queen Sofia, who did many of these solo trips during the last reign.
Her arrival in Honduras was classic Letizia in her lowest key business attire, so I was curious what we'd get for the rest of the trip.
And subsequently was delighted to see that she did intend to honor her hosts by turning the volume up a notch at dinner that evening with the President and First Lady of Honduras, wearing a sparkly repeated Felipe Varela black cocktail dress. She even brought some diamonds along for the ride, in the form of her Cartier bracelet and a new pair of pendant earrings. Gorgeous.
Day two meant a return to her usual business casual, which was appropriate for an official visit and a day visiting working projects. But I did love the last outfit she threw together before leaving the country:
Very much Letizia's usual style, but there's something a little extra delicious about this one. I do love a cropped pant, maybe that's it. Or maybe I'm just a sucker for a royal in sunglasses.
Shades make everything sassier, this is a fact and it is irrefutable.

Letizia is now in El Salvador, where her trip continues until Thursday.
