Royal Question Mark of the Day: May 26

It's just........huh? I have so many questions. SO MANY.
The Prince and Princess of Monaco attended
the Monaco Formula One Grand Prix yesterday.
What even is this? Why does the skirt have a knee vent? Did it want to be a jumpsuit but chickened out halfway through? Why are there tabs at the top? Is this a paper doll jumpsuit pasted on a three dimensional human? I mean, this shape seems clearly not meant for a world with this many dimensions.
There's just nothing about this that isn't a giant question mark. Unless she was trying to win the prize for the year's most unflattering outfit, in which case I think we can call this a winner.

Even the Dior earrings bring the question marks. A top-to-bottom achievement in huh?, I'd say.

But I won't leave you like that. I offer you this palette cleanser:
Charlotte Casiraghi at this year's Cannes Film Festival, in Gucci.
Theeeerrre we go. All better.

Royal Flashback of the Day: May 15

Royal Flashback of the Day: May 15

The countdown to the next Swedish royal wedding has begun, kids. (That will be Sweden's Carl Philip and Sofia, in case you haven't been paying attention in class.) So don't be surprised if you see some random flashbacks to random outfits worn to random Scandinavian royal weddings in the past in the month to come. Starting...now!
Crown Princess Mary turned up at Crown Princess Victoria's wedding in a flowing Jesper Høvring gown with a lace top, plus her ruby tiara and ruby earrings with pearls attached. This was the first time Mary wore the Danish Ruby Parure Tiara outside of Denmark, and it was a fitting choice: Queen Ingrid made the rubies one of her signature jewels, and Ingrid was a Swedish princess who married the future King of Denmark in the very same church where Victoria was set to marry Daniel. And of course, the ruby set has a Swedish history of its own.
The jewels I was on board with, but the rest of this look didn't make much sense to me. The muted blue/green shade of the gown seemed such a strange choice as a background for ruby jewels and the bright yellow and blue sash of Sweden's Order of the Polar Star. The beige lace and the asymmetrical top didn't tie in with anything either. It didn't start to make sense until we saw the gown again the following year, after it underwent one of those trademark Danish royal makeovers...
And now I get it! Well, I get it as long as this was the end goal all along, making the look for Victoria's wedding just a temporary stop along the way. The now-banished lace made sense as a cover for the shoulders for a church wedding and a place to stick the sash and portrait brooch, intended to be replace with a sweeping over the shoulder addition at a later date.
Høvring does this flowy thing very well indeed, and in this format, I'd put this among my Mary favorites. The only downside is that it took a previous version to get here.

Here's a surprising face on the London charity gala circuit: Princess Tessy of Luxembourg! The wife of Prince Louis and daughter-in-law of the Grand Duke and Grand Duchess attended the Spring Gala in aid of the Red Cross War Memorial Children's Hospital on Tuesday. I'm glad to see her smiling face.
This dress, though...it's not bad or anything. But I can't help but feel that at best, it's that bridesmaid dress at the back of the closet your friend swore you could wear again after the wedding. And she lied.

Tessy made a quick trip back after attending the closing of the Octave in Luxembourg over the weekend. The event brings out whatever family members are available, but this year's fashion crop was a little lacking, I thought. Except for Princess Amalia, daughter of Prince Félix and Princess Claire, making her first royal appearance. This is the Week of Cute, and her wee bow is full of win.
Anyway, judge for yourself: more photos on the link in the tweet, and there's full coverage (including explanations of what this event actually is) over at Luxarazzi too.

Royal Flashback of the Day: May 6

Monday was the Met Gala, a.k.a. the Costume Institute Gala at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the red carpet was filled with the usual assortment of celebs in competition for the most eye-catching outfit. (Click here for a gallery of this year's looks, or here for smart takes from the Fug Girls.) But turn back the clock a couple decades, and you'll find a guest straight out of our realm.
The appearance of Diana, Princess of Wales at the 1996 ball wasn't as random as it might seem: Diana was a guest of her good friend Liz Tilberis, then-head of Harper's Bazaar and hostess of the event that year. And more importantly, the event celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Christian Dior label, which had just appointed British designer John Galliano as its creative director. Diana's dress that evening was Galliano's first couture creation at the Dior helm. It was a highly anticipated moment, coming a month before the debut of his first collection. (The dress, now a part of the brand's history, was included in a Dior exhibit at Harrod's in 2013.)
Galliano fit the lingerie-inspired midnight blue slip dress with black lace trim to the Princess himself in a series of meetings at Kensington Palace, and she did make some requests for changes to his original design. The final product was accompanied by a dark wrap to guard against the December cold and a small navy version of her favorite Dior handbag, a style she liked so much it was renamed Lady Dior in her honor. She added her signature sapphire and pearl choker on top (created from a sapphire and diamond brooch given to her as a wedding gift by the Queen Mother, mounted with seven strands of pearls), with sapphire and diamond earrings and bracelets.
It feels so dated now, doesn't it? It takes you right back to the underwear-as-outerwear trend of the 1990s that saw starlets in simple slip dresses all over the red carpet. And it was perhaps too trendy for its own good, sacrificing the structure that would have been more flattering to her figure. For Diana, it was a daring choice, another dress (and event) fit for her new post-divorce life. The whole look feels unfathomably understated in comparison to the looks we see at the same event today, but it made a huge splash at the time. Many reviews of the dress itself were not stellar - it really is terribly hard to resist pointing out that a princess left the house in her nightgown - but the publicity worked its magic and its place in fashion history was secured.

(P.S.: If you really want a flashback, check out this Hard Copy segment on the appearance. It's...a blast from the past.)

Royal Outfits of the Day: April 27

Two outfits today, one I should like that I don't, and one I shouldn't that I do. It doesn't make any more sense than that sentence did.
Take this, for instance: Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary celebrated the anniversary of the Hotel d'Angleterre, and Mary wore a black dress from Ole Yde's YDE label with a tiered tulle skirt.
So this is basically the little sister to that black Carolina Herrera gown that Queen Letizia wore last year. And I looooved that gown. Therefore...I should like this gown...and yet, NOPE.
I blame the bodice. Maybe just borrow the dress from Leti next time?

And then there's Crown Princess Mette-Marit, still doing her version of wardrobe musical chairs, grabbing whatever's at hand when the music stops.
And much to my surprise, I think I like it this time! Sure, I'd change the skirt, because I can always find something to change. But the sweater manages to feel very much in the M-M style without being a) black or white, b) covered in flowers, or c) covered in ruffles. A change I can get behind.
The sweater is from Burberry Prorsum
The whole world's gone topsy turvy, I'm telling you.

CHOP!
Queen Letizia attended the 'Woman Awards' last night in Madrid.
Look who got her hair did...
She tested out the faux bob (yes, that's bob with ONE o, stop giggling) hairstyle a time or two, and now she's really gone for it. I like to think she made a point of holding on to those long locks juuuuussst long enough to debut her new tiara in the best possible fashion before making the cut. (More on that tiara coming up later in the week, by the way!)
Her newly short and sassy bob was paired with Yanes earrings, Prada shoes, and another Felipe Varela LBD (she really takes that theory that you can never go wrong with a little black dress to heart, you know). I think I like the new 'do - she certainly seems to like it, at least. I do believe I'm detecting some swagger here. And I love a queen with swagger.
