Harry and Meghan: how we knew it was love

Is today the day? Engagement speculation is so high for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle that many a royal watcher has cancelled plans until at least 11am just in case Prince Charles has a small announcement to make. The bookies have stopped taking bets, the BBC has apparently lined up enough royal experts to sink a small punt and the bunting is being freshened up and pressed as we speak. There aren't really any clues to look for other than that royal press release. So as we wait and wonder, here's a look back to the hints Harry and Meghan gave us about their royal romance which began in the summer of 2016 and is making its way to the altar as we speak. This is how we knew it was love....

Social media has played a big part in the unfolding royal romance of Harry and Meghan and the way it's been told. William and Kate saw their betrothal pinged across Twitter as Clarence House set up its account the day before their big anno but Hazza and Megs have seen every stage of their relationship shared on social media. Meghan dropped a pretty big clue back in October 2016 when she posted a photo of herself at Soho House wearing a bracelet which turned out to match one that Harry had been spotted wearing too. Clue number one was out there.....

Just before Prince Harry issued a statement confirming their relationship, we got another huge great big hint from Meghan on her Instagram. At the start of November 2016, she shared a photo of a teapot and lots of people got very exicted indeed. It is a very lovely teapot, that's true, but the fact it was shaped as an elephant was seen as a nod to Harry's conservation work (he's taken part in projects to help preserve populations). And drinking tea is about as British as it gets. Meghan made her mark with this one.



Several days later came the news that the couple were a pair. Harry issued an unprecedented statement calling for the media to leave Meghan alone. He called her his girlfriend and criticised those who had levelled abusive comments at her. It was a declaration of love that set everyone talking.


Meghan then went on to post a pictre of two banans spooning with a message ''Sleep tight''. Quite possibly the most modern confirmation of a royal romance ever. What's not to love?

Megs clearly likes love and food to go together because this appeared on her Instagram around the time we all knew about her royal romance. Let's face it, there can only be one recipient for this herby hand out of hearts and that's Harry. Since then we've seen the couple out together informally, kissing at a polo match and then making their first offical appearance together at the closing ceremony of the Invictus Games. Meghan also gave an interview to Vanity Fair confirming the couple were in love. But while we all wait for the official announcement, let's just take a moment to remember how sweet it really was to see this royal romance unfold. All those cryptic pictures that made it clear it really was love.

Royal Wedding Rumours: is Harry about to marry Meghan

Stand by, this is your royal engagement warning. Social media is abuzz, and I mean ayyyy-buzzzzzzzz, about Harry and Meghan showing off the sparkler soon. As in tomorrow. As in less than 24 hours away. And there are some reasons why this really might be it. Stand by for the latest royal wedding rumours, quite possibly the last instalment before we turn into Royal Wedding Countdown....




You want to know something is about to happen? Check the bookies. They have stopped taking bets now on whether Harry and Meghan will get married next year, rumours are so fierce. Just about every paper is reporting tonight that some bookies have closed their books on the wedding happening. The Evening Standard also reported that an engagement might be ''just hours away'' ....






It's Londoner's Diary column whispered that the BBC is clearing the decks for a major royal story on Friday 24th November. And LaineyGossip reported that along with other media outlets in the States, they had received an epic amount of requests about availability for comments on a royal story for this Friday.  In other news, we know that Meghan has quit Suits and earlier this week her body double in the show posted a photo of the two with a message wishing her well in her new life.





The duchess in waiting, sorry, lady in question was giving nothing away as she stepped out in London. Yes, Meghan is here. She apparently landed on Saturday but was first seen on Monday. She also had a facial which could possibly be a perfectly timed piece of preparation for an engagement photocall...or a way to recover after a hectic few days whcih has seen you quit your job, move home and take a transatlantic flight. Time will tell....

Prince Harry's Solo Salute

It was a solitary salute this year and none the less poignant for it. Prince Harry attended opening of the Fields of Remembrance at Westminster Abbey on November 9th 2017 to pay tribute to all those who have lost their lives while fighting for their country. But while Harry has been a regular at this event for several years now, this time round things were different. For this was the first time the prince walked the lines of poppies since the retirement of his grandfather, the Duke of Edinburgh.




The prince also laid his own poppies in commemoration before saluting and taking part in a two minute silence.

Harry and Philip have, together, opened the annual tribute to the fallen for several years. The Fields of Remembrance are organised by the Poppy Factory which lays hundreds of thousands of tributes around the grounds of the ancient abbey, for so long a symbol for the nation, to remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice. This year 70,000 poppies have been planted in 380 plots in memoriam.






There were still plenty of familiar faces for Prince Harry to catch up with. On previous visits he has met members of the Armed Forces and their families coming to remember those lost and this year caught up with seven year old Harrison Degiorgio-Lewis who comes to commemorate his uncle, Lieutenant Aaron Lewis of 29 Commando Regiment Royal Artillery, who was killed on duty in Afghanistan. Harry met Harrison last year and the two had another chat this time round.







And there was time for a more personal chat as veteran, Matt Weston, asked Harry where ''his missus'' was and got a right royal smile as an answer. When asked if Meghan Markle would be at the Fields of Remembrance next year, Harry joked that he wouldn't be able to hide her anywhere while Matt Weston, who lost both his legs while serving with the Royal Engineers 33 Regiment in Afghanistan, gave the royal romance his seal of approval by describing the duchess in waiting as ''brilliant'' and ''cool''.

If (should that be when) Meghan does make an appearance at the event, it would be another chapter in a royal story that stretches back decades. For many years, the Queen Mother attended the event. The first Field of Remembrance was organised in 1928 by an army officer, George Arthur Howson, and has grown in the years since. The poppies are planted the Thursday before Remembrance Sunday and remain, bearing witness, for eight days. After that, they are burned and the ashes scattered on the fields of northern France and Belgium where so many lost their lives in the First World War. Any money raised goes to the Poppy Factory and the Royal British Legion.

Prince Harry is expected to take part in the annual Remembrance Sunday service on November 12th although he won't be present at the Festival of Remembrance the night before as both he and the Duke of Cambridge will be attending rugby matches that day. The service at the Cenotaph this Sunday will also see another change  - for the first time, the Queen will watch from a balcony overlooking Whitehall while the Prince of Wales lays her wreath on behalf of the nation. The Duke of Edinburgh will be at his wife's side, another echo of the changes that led this year to Harry's solo salute.

Royal Wedding Rumours: November's first whispers

Another week, another round of royal rumours about engagements and weddings involving a certain prince called Harry and Meghan Markle. This week has been fairly quiet on the wedding whispers front but there's still more than enough to plough through as we head into November, long tipped to be the month when Harry and Meghan will do the whole show off a diamond thing at St James' Palace. As the big month dawned, there was lots of talk about clothes, homes and nicknames. Time to get busy with a round up of royal wedding rumours....

Let's start with clothes. Yep, we all know that if when Meghan becomes a royal duchess, there will be a huge focus on what she wears but it's begun already with Cosmopolitan magazine noting that Ms Markle's outfits have become noticeably more conservative in recent times. Apparently, this is because the Queen has a ''no knees'' policy for regal clothing which prevents both men and women of the House of Windsor flashing the thighs while out and about. Several titles have this week been asking whether Meghan, who used to like a pair of shorts or mini skirt, is now keeping her hems to calf and ankle length. Hard for us to tell as she's rarely seen in public right now but apparently no one should be surprised if her next appearance sees her in a tweed two piece with pearls aplenty.

The Mail on Sunday has a good old chat about what Meghan might do with herself when she moves to London later this month, a shift apparently set in stone for the paper. Right now, Megs is finishing her stint on Suits where she plays Rachel Zane and once that's done in a few weeks' time she is apparently setting up home in the capital. The paper suggests she might set up her own foundation - well, Meghan is already noted for her humanitarian work so just about everyone expects her to focus on that as her life changes. And don't forget, to give notice of marriage she needs to be resident in England or Wales. Not that we're starting any rumours here but....

A good royal romance needs at least one story a week that includes the word ''adorable'' in its headline and Harry and Meghan kept up the tradition this week. OK magazine reported on their ''adorable nicknames'' but you can put the sick bucket to one side, there's no ''cuddle bundle'' and ''honey bunny'' here. Beneath the headline is a round up of nicknames the couple have been known by already. Apparently, Meghan has sometimes been called Meg while her mum, Doria, likes to call her ''Flower''. We all know that her beau is really Prince Henry but has been known as Harry since birth. The article also explains that his mum, Diana, liked to called him ''My Little Spencer'' because of the red hair he inherited from her side of the family. Honey bunny is actually easier to say....more royal wedding rumours next week.

Royal Wedding Rumours - this week's round up

There's only one royal story we're really all waiting for and it's THAT engagement. Since just about everyone decided it's when rather than if for Harry and Meghan, the chatter about the couple has gone into overdrive. It moves so fast, it's hard to keep up. So from now until we get the big anno (let's face it that might be hours), there will be a weekly round up of the most high profile whispers about the couple right here. Settle down for your first dose of royal wedding rumours.....



Much of this week's speculation about the royal romance of the year came from the Channel 4 documentary, When Harry Met Meghan: A Royal Romance, which aired in the UK this weekend (check out the Channel 4 website here). Top of the excitement was the news that Harry is hoping to marry his telly crush. Katie Nicholl, royal correspondent for the Mail on Sunday and Vanity Fair, told the show that Harry had admitted fancying Meghan almost two years before their relationship started. She relayed a conversation she'd had with a friend of the prince a couple of years ago in which Harry, then single, had revealed his ideal woman was ''Meghan Markle from Suits''.

We also got confirmation, as if any were needed, that Markus Anderson is destined to be cast forever as a royal matchmaker (like accompanying Meghan to the Invictus Games opening and then hanging out with her, Harry and Doria at the closing event hadn't already cemented his place). The show was the latest to talk about how the man who was a friend of both before they even met brought Harry and Meghan together, adding them both to the guest list for a private gathering at Soho House in London in July 2016 after the prince asked him to help in the getting to know you process. Hazza and Megs got chatting and the rest, as they say, is royal history.




Just about every royal couple you can name is related to one another in some fashion (clearly in a less awkward and genetically complex way than used to be the norm in the Middle Ages). In fact you know a regal relationship is really serious when someone produces a family tree linking the two beloveds via a long dead person neither has ever heard of. Harry and Meghan are no exception - this week, the Mail on Sunday discovered that if this pair of lovebirds go all the way back to the 15th century, they have a common ancestor. The man whose genes they share is Ralph Bowes who was born in 1480 and rose to the rank of High Sheriff of Durham. Let's put Ralph on the list of potential baby names right now and add in Margery (his mum and his daughter shared the name) for good measure. Deal done.

This week also produced the now standard number of stories about how a) the couple are already engaged b) they've already set a date (anytime between now and Christmas 2018, pick your favourite) and c) they're getting married in Westminster Abbey/ Windsor/ St Paul's (delete as applicable). This part will no doubt end up being the most regularly repeated part of the rumours round up until we get all the details from the couple themselves. More whispers next week....

All change for this royal trio?

They've been a trusty trio for several years now but one image from the latest appearance of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry perhaps highlights how things will change...and how soon. For on their visit to celebrate the Coach Core programme on October 18th, this royal three found themselves with a spare seat right next to a certain handsome prince. Harry seemed to be warming the chair for another member of this new generation of royals. Is this the last time we see the trio before three become four?


Founded by The Royal Foundation in 2012, Coach Core is an apprenticeship scheme which trains 16-24 year olds to be sports coaches and mentors in their communities. 98% of graduates on the scheme will go into full-time employment or education and continue to engage in community sport. Five years on, there are now 10 areas across the country to take part in Coach Core. The newest locations in Middlesbrough, Bristol and Devon were announced today. Prince Harry made a speech at the graduation saying, 'Coach Core currently operates in 7 cities across the country. But such is the demand for these highly skilled coaches that I am delighted to announce that The Royal Foundation will be expanding our investment in the programme. Today we are launching three new Coach Core programmes in: Middlesbrough, Devon, and Bristol.' 📷PA

William, Kate and Harry visited the London Stadium to mark the graduation of 150 new members of the Coach Core scheme. The initiative was set up by the trio's Royal Foundation five years ago and it helps young people aged between 16 and 24 to become sports coaches. To mark its birthday, as well as celebrate the achievements of those who were graduating, the royals spent time chatting to those involved in the scheme as well as those supporting it.

It's the second time we've seen this royal trio in less than 48 hours, after their engagement at Paddington Station where they were visiting children going through difficult times and being treated to a day to remember. But while plenty of attention has been focused on the baby bump of a certain duchess (who was back in blue after a pinch of pink earlier in the week), it was Prince Harry who was really getting people talking this time round.

Not only did the prince deliver the keynote speech in which he told those involved in the programme how proud he, his brother and sister in law were of them and talked about the power of sport, he also got to announce the expansion of the Coach Core programme - another sign of the huge success his royal initiatives enjoy.

But it was the sight of a spare seat next to Harry at one point in the engagement that really seemed to highlight why all eyes were on him. There is something about Harry right now that more than underlines the fact we're heading for a royal wedding. The prince seems happier and more confident in himself than we've ever seen him and having introduced girlfriend, Meghan Markle, to the informal royal engagement with several appearances together at the Invictus Games, it now feels more than inevitable that sooner, rather than later, we will see the two together as a royal couple in the making.

The royal trio of William, Kate and Harry have been a fixture for six years now but the times are a changing. With an added member, this group has more power to achieve their ambitions and more opportunity to expand the appeal of the Royal Family to a new generation. There is something about this engagement that says it might well be the end of one era and the dawn of a new world, to the power of four.

5 things we learned when Harry held hands with Meghan

Holding hands. We all need to do it more. It's one of the truly lovely things that can be just everyday and sometimes so much more. At this point we perhaps need to introduce Prince Harry and Meghan Markle who did that whole hand holding thing at the wheelchair tennis at the Invictus Games in Toronto. The couple made their first official appearance together and put a big smile on quite a lot of faces. Here are five things we learned when Harry held hands with Meghan.





1. Meghan is a cool customer

If she was nervous, she hid it well. Meghan Markle walked out in front of a gawping world holding hands with her love and smiled her way through it. OK, both she and Harry looked slightly anxious as they did the whole stroll through the cameras thing but once they'd taken their seats and settled down, they looked like they'd already spent a lifetime attending public engagements together. Royal close up? More than ready.




2. Meghan has a cheeky side

This duchess in waiting has a sense of humour. For her big appearance holding hands with the man she's already told everyone she's in love with, Meghan chose a shirt called ''The Husband''. This canny lady knew everyone would be chasing the details of her clothes and threw it right back at them with an item that left everyone smiling. That's classy.


3.  It's now officially official




Thanks to Twitter star Cepe Smith here who quickly pointed out that this event ended up in the Court Circular. Yep, whereas the royals usually just tell us in official terms that Harry has attended events at the Invictus Games, his visit to the wheelchair tennis got its own special mention. So Meghan was at an official engagement with her handsome prince. Engagement. There's a word.



4.  They are super loved up

You know how royals used to be all stuffy and hands off in public, Forget that. There were no big grabs or snogs here but it was clear to anyone who has a) ever seen a remotely happy couple and b) was looking at Harry and Meghan for more than 5 seconds that they are very much in love. Shared jokes, hair nuzzling, lots of laughs - these two are about as happy as they come. Anyone would think they were about to get married.


5. Lots of people are very happy for them



Let's face it, we all love a royal romance especially when it looks like it's heading to the altar and the reaction to this loved up pair was pretty positive all round. From thousands of tweets and photo shares to headlines on just about every paper and magazine going that involved the word 'love', everyone seemed to be smiling about this regal show of affection. There was also a big show of support from the competitors at the Invictus Games who seemed happy to see their hero, Harry, on the brink of another landmark in his own life. Sometimes, holding hands can mean so much more.

Invictus 2017, day two: the photo album

The Invictus Games are well and truly under way and some pretty special moments have been happening on and off the track. Prince Harry has been leading the cheering as the competitors at the third staging of the event he created and has made his own took to the field to claim more medals. Harry has been supporting sporting stars everywhere as teams from 17 nations compete for glory at the games, set up for injured service personnel. Oh, and the fifth in line to the throne walked in hand in hand with his girlfriend. It's been a busy day. Here's Invictus on September 25th 2017, in photos.





Harry's first engagement of the day (that word gets everywhere right now) was at the Canadian Institute for Military and Veteran Health Research where he took part in a forum. In a speech, he expressed again his passion for providing the best support for veterans who have encountered physical, mental and emotional health problems following their service and told his audience of his conviction about the positive role sport can play in ''the recovery of body and mind''.

That suit didn't last long (did someone say Suits?). Invictus means Harry in his branded polo shirt and jeans bobbing round the Games supporting competitors from every nation. And that's what Harry did next. Except this time he brought a friend. Called Meghan. And the royal world went nuts.

The future Duke and Duchess of...sorry, Harry and Meghan watched the wheelchair tennis and had a jolly good time doing it by the looks of things. And everyone else started working out likely dates for a wedding.
Then just when we thought Harry couldn't provide any more joy on a Monday at the end of September, he popped up on the BBC making us all remember, again, just how much commitment he has to Invictus and helping those who are working towards a normal life after injury during service. His words were inspiring, his passion was clear and we now know he has someone to share it all with. This is a special day for the prince of hearts and the photo album shows it.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have sent just about everyone into a royal wedding tailspin by appearing together in public for the first time officially. The couple attended the wheelchair tennis at the Invictus Games in Toronto. We got hand holding, what looked like a little nuzzle and plenty of smiles. It all makes an engagement seem ever more likely - here are the photos that prove Harry hearts Meghan and she's loving her handsome prince right back.

Prince Harry: Invictus 2017, the final countdown

Everyone's wild about Harry. The prince of hearts is in Toronto where he's celebrating the third staging of the Invictus Games. We already know how special this event is to Harry - the Games, for wounded service personnel, were his brainchild and he's been a driving force behind turning them into a global success story. And everyone who is anyone wanted to grab five minutes with the prince as the Games got underway. Ahead of the opening ceremony (attended by Meghan Markle, pics here), the prince was meeting, greeting and debating like never before. Here's what Harry did in the countdown to Invictus 2017.





Let's start with the flashbulbs. There is huge global interest in this year's Invictus Games. The third running of the event, which started in London in 2014, is really pulling in the crowds and there was a big turnout to see Harry on his first engagement in Toronto on September 22nd. Spot the prince amid the sparkle as Harry arrives at True Patriot Love, Canada's Military Family Foundation looking after personnel and their loved ones.


Harry was there for a symposium about the issues facing injured service peronnel and their families. As in previous Invictus Games, the prince working tirelessly to ensure that the massive media interest in the event is focused on those for whom it was set up. In the build up to the opening ceremony, the prince took part in several more debates and discussions about the support on offer including a meeting at Canada's Centre for Addiction and Mental Health where he heard about the treatment and research going on there.



We know from London and Orlando that there is nothing Prince Harry likes better once Invictus is under way than surprising competitors with a few behind the scenes visits and offering some moral support while they train. He wasted no time in Toronto, popping into the pool as soon as he could to cheer on the athletes as they made their final preparations.






Handsome prince plus cars, you say? Why, of course, that would be a pleasure. A soon to be sixth in line to the throne has got to relax even when he's steering a major global sporting event to success and Harry popped in on the Invictus Toronto Driving Challenge where he got speedy before getting super cute and taking part in a children's challenge.






Time to get high level. Since Invictus started in 2014, it's become a major event that has attracted support at the very highest level. Prince Harry held some pretty big meetings in the run up to the opening ceremony. Get ready to sigh, here he is with Justin Trudeau. The pair had a chat about sport and the positive impact of Invictus while quite a lot of those looking on tried to decide who was a) more charming and b) even more charming than that. Let's call it a draw and just enjoy the pictures.

Earlier, Prince Harry had held a meeting with the First Lady of the United States of America, Melania Trump, who is leading the US delegation at the Games. It's Melania's first solo overseas trip since her husband became US President and the catch up made the news around the world. The last Invictus Games, in Orlando, enjoyed the support of Michelle Obama and was also attended by George W Bush. It's all an indication of just how important Invictus has become.





But while Harry is the focus of Invictus, even a prince needs an official welcome to a city. The Mayor of Toronto, John Tory, was on hand to greet the prince as the opening ceremony got closer. 




The honours of opening the Games went to the outgoing Governor General of Canada, David Johnson, who had also met up with Harry in the run up to Invictus 2017. It was a busy and bouncy build up to the event and things are only going to get more interesting. Invictus 2017 is under way and Harry is in his element.
