Royal Wedding Flashback of the Week, Part 2: April 8

In honor of the 10th wedding anniversary of the Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall, we've got part 2 of our celebration on tap for today. As I mentioned yesterday, we've touched on Camilla's wedding outfits in the past, but since I've added her jewels to my coverage at the Jewel Vault blog, you can find a feature on the jewelry she wore for the big day over there.

Over here, we have more guests! Part two of our hat-filled extravaganza features the main members of the Windsor family, starting with the boss lady herself:

The Queen
She's dosed in butter and cream, and this is a gorgeous ensemble for Her Maj. Throw in one of her larger day brooches (the Australian Wattle Brooch), and you're set to go. (You can just see Prince Philip on the side there, who was of course with her. He wore a morning suit.)

Here are the other men! They also wore morning suits. Also, we've got a pair of York sisters in...not their best coat-to-dress match ups.

But call me crazy, I have always had a soft spot for this hat. Am I crazy?? It's okay, you can tell me.

Speaking of crazy hats. Remember when Sophie was in the throes of her love affair with super tall, scarcely brimmed hats? I'm glad that's (mostly) passed, but the rest of this outfit is still a winner.

On the other hand, Anne and her veiled pill boxes are a love affair that will never die. She's cute here, though, having a proper adventure on the bus like the common people do. Note her Grima earrings and her classic brooch, please.

And note her daughter, gallantly stepping up to ensure that no British royal wedding goes without a true head scratcher of an outfit for the scrapbooks. She's a hero for the ages, this one.

How about a grab bag of recent royal outfits today? A grab bag specifically from our new and new-ish group of queen consorts. Let's do it:

I've been thinking about it, and I've decided that Queen Mathilde might be the most Diane Lockhart-esque out of our new batch of queens. And this little number above has Diane written all over it. (It's possible that I've been catching up on The Good Wife and admiring all that expensive fancy lawyer work wear, yes.)
Queen Mathilde and King Philippe visited Cerfontaine last week.
Not all the time, mind you. Big color and big volume? Not so much.

Queen Máxima and King Willem-Alexander attended a concert on Friday.
I'm also going to give this one a not so much. Has potential, but the (lack of) finishing details are everything.

Queen Letizia attended a conference in Rome last week.
This passes muster, I think. It does, however, look like it used to be a crop top, and then someone realized that pope was going to be hanging around, and decided to fill in that middle section right quick.
He seems to dig it.

Letizia wasn't quite done with the red:
King Felipe and Queen Letizia celebrated the anniversary of the Spanish National Research Council yesterday.
The orange-ness of this red is testing my  love of Letizia in red. Never mind what I said about the ex-crop top, I'll take that one instead, thanks.

Royal Trip of the Day: November 7

What has Crown Princess Mary been up to lately? Emptying her closet of all available printed items, it seems.

All these prints went on a trip with her to South Africa this week, a visit which focused on things like sexual and reproductive health and rights, which Mary is a big advocate for, as well as commercial cooperation between Denmark and South Africa cooperation and the like.

And this is a great example of a wardrobe hitting just the right note - it's fun to put it all together, but it's not the centerpiece of the trip. Billed-Bladet's YouTube channel has plenty of videos to give you a feel for the visit, such as this one in which Mary makes a new friend:

This is not a comprehensive round up, but I will include one of my favorite looks, from an evening reception:
I do love a maxi skirt and a big earring. It's just the right mix of formal and informal, no?

Mary's world travels didn't stop in South Africa this week. On the way home, she stopped in Geneva at the United Nations.
A conservative we're-doing-business suit is precisely what such a day entails, but I (and Queen Elizabeth II) approve of her choice to liven things up with a little brooch action.
A classy finish to a working week, all in all.

Royal Outfit of the Day: October 2

So, Máxima's been doing some stuff. And wearing some things. I have three comments regarding one outfit in particular.

Comment #1: Beige is just about the worst color to pair with anything bordering on acid yellow. This is Máxima mixing and matching the jacket and hat she wore to D-Day commemorations (with a floral dress) with a previously worn beige dress. Those two things should have stayed two separate things.
Earlier this week, Queen Máxima opened Micropia Museum.

Comment #2: If you want to get me to have an opinion at all on a bouquet, well, this is the way to do it. Can any of you Dutch speakers hear what she said when presented with this? See the following video (or click here for an alternate one):
You don't have to love her outfit, but you kinda do have to love her little turn to display the bouquet for the photographers. "You're gonna want a picture of this one, guys. TRUST ME."

Okay, one final comment on one additional outfit. We'll part on a nice note.
Yesterday, Máxima opened Markthal in Rotterdam.
Comment #4: This is such a great neckline on her. Super flattering, and all the better to show off those yummy ruby and diamond earrings. Iron out the wrinkles and I'm totally on board with this dress. I have also picked a shot where her shoes aren't included, because I said we were parting on a nice note. You're welcome.

Royal Outfit of the Day: September 18

This one's for those of you that complain that I think Mary never puts a foot wrong.
Video: The Danish royal family attended a dinner for the Red Cross last week.
Several steps wrong, this. A textured mustard dress is a hard sell on its own, if you ask me, and that's before you start throwing accessories at it. And the accessories are where I focus my scrunchy face: a statement cuff and a statement belt and a statement pair of earrings and a statement feather clutch. That's a lot of statements, my friend. (And they don't necessarily agree with each other, these statements, as the clutch and the earrings are frilly and intricate and the belt and cuff are strong and structural.) It looks a lot better in video, mainly because you have less time to see all of those accoutrements. (But click here for a gallery anyway, if you like.)

With that out of the way, we can talk about the outfit that really needs our attention: Henrik, of course. DaisyMobile-driving Henrik and his BOLO TIE. (Sidebar: The Wiki page on the bolo tie amuses me greatly. They are easy to make from attractive flat objects such as Christmas tree ornaments or refrigerator magnets! Excellent.) I hope he wears it for the fictional dinner party I plan on inviting him to, because I have QUESTIONS.
In other news, Joachim and Marie are there (bless her heart, she looks nice, but she's blending into the background) and Daisy pulls out the surprise best-dressed of the night with a dress that flatters her waist just right, each and every one of the thousand times she's worn it.

Oh, and by the way: Heads up, Canada! Mary and Fred have arrived on your fair shores for a visit. Catch 'em if you can, and report back if you do! Yesterday was day 1.
I love it when they do the classic family album pose. "And here we are in Ottawa, kids..."

Spring!

Well spring is definitely here at Swallows Nest Farm.  In fact, it arrived a few days before the end of August with some very warm, beautiful blue-sky days and lots of spring colour in the flowers.  And of course the swallows are back for the summer.  They seem to be having such fun dipping and diving and reclaiming their nests left abandoned over the winter.


We've been in full swing preparing for the warmer months with lots of pruning and reclaiming areas that were let go over the last few years.  (We've been busy with our baby girl who has major health issues and this has meant the farm has been a little neglected in areas.)  Whilst doing some heavy duty pruning during the week I came across this gorgeous little nest.  It's tiny with the eggs being around the size of the end of my thumb.  So cute!! And definitely a sign of spring.


And there has been no shortage of gorgeous weather over the last few weeks.  Wow!  It makes your heart skip a beat sometimes.


Of course, the bulbs are blooming madly.  While we were out driving the other day, we came across this incredible field of daffodils.  Spring!! With a capital S!!


Yellow is such a "springy" colour.  And set against those clear blue skies, it just sings.  The Leucadendron Safari Goldstrikes are glowing and gorgeous.


I've been madly picking them.  They're so much bigger and more productive than last year.


And the stem length has been fantastic!  1.4 metres tall, some of them are.  And they've been generously snipped leaving plenty on the plant.  I think they're almost too tall to use ... maybe!


Our local school hosts a flower show just as spring starts and we love to donate flowers.  It's just another indicator that the seasons are turning - lots of fresh new spring colours!


And that amazing, glowing yellow!


The flower show is always a feast for the eyes.  These little beauties were done by the kids at the school.  


The huge variety of daffodils are truly mind blowing!!


The variety of natives available in spring is fantastic too, and makes it a delight to create bouquets and bunches.  I'm going to soak up the blue-sky days and the riot of colour while I can, because I know that spring can also bring cruel winds, and freezing weather.  It snowed here in September last year!  There's so much to be done around the farm in spring and in the business of harvesting, time will fly and before I know it, summer will arrive.  But I'm intent on savouring the sweet moments of spring this year!


Royal Outfit of the Day: April 16

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, with Prince George, arrived in Australia for the next leg of their tour.
Yellow - for wattle, for sunshine, for half of the green and gold Australia color combo - was an easy guess for arrival in Australia, but the Duchess might have surprised you with her designer: Roksanda Ilincic, a London-based Serbian designer. She's worn Ilincic before, of course, but we'll have to wait for an Australian designer to take the stage (and it will certainly be only a matter of time). This label has done quite a bit with yellow lately, bright and cheery color blocking all over the place, so perhaps the surprise isn't that surprising after all. As for this dress, yellow with blocks of white at the bottom and on the sleeves - LOVE. Easily my pick for best outfit of the tour. So far.
The retail version available here from Roksanda Ilincic. The colors have been reversed and the bell sleeve reduced (an excellent change!), and the neckline opened up for the Duchess.

Mathilde at a couple palace events and visiting a hospital; Kate out and about at a charity; Mary at a meeting; Victoria at the Royal Swedish Academy of War Sciences' formal gathering, at a couple engagements and holding an audience
Call this the non-trip category - and call Victoria the winner, if only for giving us at least one evening gown, even if it is a repeat and even if it is another almost-tiara-but-not occasion.

Yesterday we caught up with the traveling Danes and Spaniards, today we have a partial selection of the Dutch on their ongoing introductory trip to the Caribbean. Máx on a big trip is usually like catnip to me, so I'm not sure why this one's left me feeling rather meh so far. Ah, well, they're not done yet. No matter what, I remain impressed at her ability to dig up so many neon-flavored outfits.

Charlene's coat is giving me Star Trek bathrobe vibes, but you have to give the Monaco crew: those were some actual hats. All hats or no hats, no fascinator shenanigans here.

So much going on right now, I nearly forgot to give Sophie her proper due for rocking her Benjamin Button fabulousness in Valentino red while celebrating Doctor Who at Buckingham Palace. Do you think if I wrote to the palace really nicely, I could get her secret for de-aging? Because I'm just getting older over here, and it's not fair.

Hints of Spring

August in my part of the world is characterised by the colours yellow and blue.  It seems that wherever I look those two colours catch my eye.  The sea, the mountains, and often the sky are a rich blue,  and provide a lovely backdrop for the cheerful yellow that is glowing everywhere.  Wattle season is definitely in full swing and the large black and silver wattle trees are becoming golden with their masses of little flowers, all like miniature sunbursts.  I love wattle!  


At Swallows Nest, the signs of spring are everywhere, with many of the Leucadendrons in flower.  Safari Sunset, usually rich red for most of the year, are yellow and pink at the moment with a delicate rose-like fragrance that makes picking them a joy.  


Safari Gold Strike are beginning to flower and are a beautiful fresh yellow at the moment.  I have started to pick them in earnest now and I'm so happy with their long sturdy stems and beautiful big blowsy flower heads.  Yellow is such a great colour to lift the spirits at the end of winter.  


Inca Gold are another stand-out for this time of year - yellow pointed blooms stretching toward the sky.

These flowers are the Tall Red Leucadendron.  It is a very vigorously growing plant that we pruned with a chainsaw (they really were unruly!) in our first year at Swallows Nest.  They have grown back to be bigger than they were at first.  They will need to be heavily pruned this year, and this gives them great stems for next year.  I love their lime green pompoms!  


I love the combination of colours available at this time of the year - and the textures too.  It's all just a hint that spring is not far away.  


Cheery Winter Colour

Winter can be a little dreary, especially when you get days and days of rain.  In Tasmania, the sun rises late and sets early, and tracks lower across the sky than in summer.   Sunshine is sometimes scarce.  But  just as winter is really setting in, there are a number of plants that begin to bloom in that sunshine yellow that you really crave on a grey day.  The daffodils and jonquils start to pop up, and the masses of wattle brighten up the landscape.  Leucadendrons are wonderfully colourful in winter too.  Inca Gold are a well known hybrid that have been grown commercially for many years.  As the weather gets colder, they get brighter, until the yellow becomes almost creamy.   They glow on a grey day, seeming to promise that warmer weather is coming.


These Inca Gold are fabulous in a seasonal bunch.  Their colour coincides with the flowering of Safari Sunset which, whilst beautifully rich red at other times of the year, turn pink and cream with central cones covered in yellow pollen.  It's such a pretty and cheery midwinter colour combination.




These bunches of mid-winter cheer are off to a local shop, ready to bring some sunshine to someone's grey day!
